Free 3D rendering and modeling programs
If anyone remembers Bryce, the 3D landscape designing program, it has been bought by Daz3d and they have released the last version (5.5) as free. They also have bought out Poser and have a free version of that (called Daz3D Studio) that is available. You can also get a bunch of free models and content for it.
Mac and PC
Daz3D website: www.daz3d.com
List of all the downloads of their free programs (Mac and PC) is at:

Ignore the Carrera program, that is their premiere modeling program and is only a trial.
Bryce 5.5 and Daz Studio are the completely free programs. The programs are listed twice because one is PC and one is Mac, you have to click on the link to go to each download page to see which is which.
Once you install the programs it asks you to register it and you have to go to their website to get the free key.
After you register the program you will have a link in the Daz program for a link to a basic model pack with a ton of stuff.

Re: Free 3D rendering and modeling programs
Bryce is nice, and the full version is not so very expensive--especially considering that Maya is several thousand. Though Maya used to be like $6000. Prices are coming down, functionality is going up, and here come the 4- and 8-cpu machines...
