My wife and I just had this conversation a couple of days ago. She'd read some article about words only Texans use. Of course, I grew up calling them 'stock tanks' while she'd only heard 'tank'.

Yeah, I think that's regional, cause sometimes - like in East Texas - I hear "stock tank", but around here, it's generally "tank". And I guess it's generally assumed that this refers to a "tank" where stock is watered.

Actually I have heard stock tank used in California. I have never been close enough to the subject to know what is normally used.
Micah 6:8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Yeah, it's kinda funny when somebody calls it a "pond" or a "lake", and gets corrected to "tank" -- like... "how in the WORLD can you call a small body of muddy water a TANK?"

Like the Slough of Despond in Pilgrim's Progress?

And how do you pronounce 'slough'?

Well, probably not exactly like the Slough of Despond. But usually a muddy sort of pond thingy.

                  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slough_(hydrology)

                  And I pronounce "slough" "slew".

At least that's how my Dad told me it was pronounced. So, of course, that is the correct way to pronounce it.

If you don't believe me, here is a whole list of words that rhyme with slough.

A tank is an artificial body of water. Sometimes quite large sometimes smaller.

I think some sloughs are man-made, as well.

Correct, and in Texas, they're dug out, then lined with clay.

In some parts of Texas, digging them out accomplishes lining with clay.

True. Or you can just build a pottery business and dig the clay out of your back yard!

Never heard of such a thing. Hmmm.
