Sweatshirts and pills
I know this is trivial, but I just bought a new sweatshirt that's gunning to be my favorite. Nice and thick, lined hood, it even has a fancy pocket in the front.
My question is: how do I wash it without getting the nice soft inside all pilled up? Is it the wash or dry cycle that does it? I don't want to ruin my new favorite sweatshirt!

Re: Sweatshirts and pills
Wash it in gentle, use something like woolite. Dry it on a sweater rack, not in the dryer.

Re: Sweatshirts and pills
Turn it inside out before washing?
Are there instructions on it?
Is it cotton? A blend of some sort?
What colour is it?

Re: Sweatshirts and pills
Turn it inside out before washing. Hang it up to dry or lay it out flat like Pilgrim said to do.
The dryer is usually the culprit.
I would use cool or cold water to help prevent fading.
And/or find a detergent that helps prevent fading.
Good luck!

You still may eventually get pilling, but hopefully these tips will help.

Re: Sweatshirts and pills
Do not wash towels or other heavy fabrics (ie.jeans) along with it. Also fabric softener is NOT good for fabric.

Do you have a top loading machine or front loading machine?

Re: Sweatshirts and pills
The reality is that the pilling is going to happen even if you don't wash it. It results initially from fabric rubbing on fabric. Every time you wear the sweatshirt over another shirt that happens. The fabric of the sweatshirt rubs against the fabric of the under shirt forcing shed fibers to cluster and ball. When you send the sweatshirt through a heavy wash and dry cycle it speeds the process.

Gabby,
Front loading. Very little water/detergant used.
Pilgrim,
I figured that, but anything to get more than a month out of the thing before it feels like a 5 dollar number I bought at Target (of which I have a bunch).

Well, that's about as good as you can get.

Re: Sweatshirts and pills
I use dryer balls which help with friction and softness (I really like them), but I would think that jeans with all their metal bits are not good for fabrics.
