I wouldn't be surprised. I think their goal, though, is to launch shuttles from high orbit, meaning that a shuttle could carry more payload at much cheaper cost.

And it only took a few decades for them to get to this point. Ah well. I'm happy they're there finally.

I think its 6 engines were scavenged from 2 used 747s, but those fuselages don't resemble 747s at all. I think those are new composite airframes.

            From Popular Mechanics...

In early February a pair of United Airlines 747s from Victorville, Calif., landed at Mojave. They won't leave intact. The two aircraft will be cut to pieces and their parts repurposed for the Stratolaunch prototype, including the six engines that will be mounted on the Roc's wings. Engineers will also cannibalize the airliners' landing gear.

The Roc's airframe will be new, built of carbon fiber. Aerospace engineers are finalizing that design in Scaled's engineering offices in Hangar 78 at Mojave. "We've grown up with airplanes that are of a scale where you call 10 of your buddies over and say, 'I'm going to put this wing on today,'" Kevin Mickey, Scaled's executive VP, says. "Building an airplane of this size is more of a shipyard-type logistic challenge." So cranes and big jigs will be the order of the day.

I keep forgetting a lot of their work is being done right here in the Mojave.

One of the reasons given is the ferocious sound that will be produced when SIX 747 engines whine up to maximum thrust for nearly TWO MILES before takeoff.

(Another, not mentioned, may have to do with the risk to population if it were to crash)

That shuttle didn't make orbit. And my aerodynamics professor would have docked you a grade for that spelling error (one of his pet peeves).

No, it didn't make orbit...but it did go where no man had gone before. ..

I thought space shuttles had ridden planes only in movies. Did they actually do it before in real life?

I'm not sure the point of that type of rocket launch is to take heavier loads. By the sounds of the actual amount of cargo going into low earth orbit might be little more than eight tons.

It seems the point of this launch system is that it would be weather independent and more flexible in terms of where you launch from.

What will truly bring prices down is the full and rapidly reuseable rocket concept that SpaceX is developing.

NASA used a specially modified 747 to move the space shuttle from wherever it landed back to Cape Canaveral for its next mission.

Also for testing the atmospheric flight characteristics.

They would take the shuttle to altitude and release it, then it would glide to landing.
