Not necessarily. The perpetrators of said incidents could have just got the guns illegally. Or they could have used [kitchen] knives. Or a Bomb of some sorts.
Overall, it's pretty speculative to say that they would have been prevented if Guns were illegal, especially when you consider that there's other stuff that's easy to get ahold of and can do more damage..

But, because of hyper-conservative-gun-nuts, thousands die each year so hillbillies can "pertect themselves from tha terists!"

Guns are just tools. They can be used for good or for evil. Just like a hammer or an axe or a knife, or even written words. Whoever said that "sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me," ...was an idiot. Words are the most powerful weapon ever devised. Why not eliminate them? Let's outlaw words.

People put way to much "power" into the guns themselves and ignore that they are just inanimate objects. People are the power behind what the guns are used for. You can use a gun to hunt for food, for sport, defense, or to kill. The gun is not some evil object that has to be eliminated.

- guns are the weapon of choice in the vast majority of homicides in America including those where the victim knows his/her offender (the only major exception are girls who tend to stab their boyfriends, rather that shoot them)

- knives - homicides using knives is a distant 2nd and those involving hammers, axes, sticks and stones, swords, popbottles, etc. are statistically rare (once married , however, women prefer to shoot their shoot their husbands and EX's rather than stab them)

- despite Sparko's eloquent plea about the "power of words," neither the FBI nor the courts recognize or keep statistics on homicides involving "auditory" weapons.

- commiting a homicides without using a gun could be considered "un American"

Robberies at knifepoint have more than doubled in the last two years to an alarming 175 a day, a study revealed.
The revelation follows a weekend of knife violence, including the death of 16-year- old GCSE student Andrew Holland and two fatal stabbings in London.
A study compiled from Government figures showed the number of street robberies involving blades rose from 25,500 in 2005 to 64,000 in the year to April 2007.
This means there were 175 robberies at knifepoint in England and Wales every day last year - up from 110 the year before and 69 in 2004-5.

I think guns and knives for that matter are banned in our prisons, I think. Anyway some how prisoners still find a way to kill each other. How is that?

My Dad has a concealed carry permit here in TX. On a trip several years ago (upon further review it was more than several), he and my mom stopped for gas and a break at a convenience store. Two shady looking guys were loitering near the pay phone. When they came out the two guys came towards them real fast, one of them was holding a knife. My dad, pulled his little .25 caliber out of his pocket and just pointed it at them so they could see it. They backed off while my mom got in the car. My dad got in and drove away. My Dad who at the time must have been about 55 y0, would have been no match for the two younger guys, one with a knife. It was late at night and this is before they had a cell phone, so they never reported it...but perfect use of the right to carry...and nobody got hurt.

A record 7 million people -- one in every 32 U.S. adults -- were behind bars, on probation or on parole by the end of last year, a Justice Department report released yesterday shows.

Although "laserfocused's" post is an obvious "red herring," it does introduce another argument that further undermines the validity of using the 2nd Amendment as a means of controlling crime.

According to the conventional wisdom expressed by supporters of "the right-to-bear-arms," public access to firearms should act as a deterent - result in reduced crime rates - which in turn should result in fewer people convicted by the judical system.

In reality, despite public access to firearms, America continues to experience record crime rates that in 2006 resulted in "7 million people -- one in every 32 U.S. adults -- were behind bars, on probation or on parole."

Easy public access to firearms + high crimes rates + one in every 32 adults convicted by the justice system = a total disconnect in "the right-to-bear-arms" supporters' argument.

MetalMark, if I wanted to kill someone I wouldn't have to use a gun. I could use a knife, or a rope, or a bomb, or my hands. Using your logic, I shouldn't be able to use my hands for anything. They could be, after all, lethal weapons.

FYI, MetalMark: My father had a gun collection. And not ONCE did he kill another human being or put me or the other family members in jeopardy. He collected guns because (A) they had a history and (B) he wanted to be able to protect his family - which, by the way, WAS HIS RIGHT!! Quite frankly, I don't appreciate ANYONE (especially an uninformed child) falsely accusing MY FATHER of being a "hillbilly."

Like I said: educate yourself. THEN you'll be taken seriously.
