Calling Jesus Yeshua
I have recently been exposed to a group on the internet that insists upon calling Jesus "Yeshua" they seem to be pentecostal in flavor but I can't seem to find out much else no name or anything.
have any of you noticed bloggers like this?Romans 1:19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

Re: Calling Jesus Yeshua
I've not noticed this, but I don't have a problem with it, since Yeshua is (I believe) the proper Hebrew / Aramaic form of his name.
"Jesus" is the anglicized variation of the Latin name "Iesus", which is the transliteration of the Greek "Iesous" from the Hebrew Yeshua. Most folks don't realize that in reality, Jesus' name in Hebrew is the same as what we would today commonly call Joshua.

Re: Calling Jesus Yeshua
I agree their is nothing wrong with it. They however seem to come across as though the name itself has a mystical quality. I generally wouldn't care. I found a kid that used to be in my youth ministry and I am just curios what he is involved in now. He hasn't responded to me yet and I wondered if anybody knew anything about it

Re: Calling Jesus Yeshua
I read a piece a while back...I think it was a blog maybe or internet article...can't remember which...anyway, the article was basically about how we in the western church, (particularly, but not exclusively), called Jesus by a name he wouldn't recognize. The piece basically said we had changed his name and how bad that was. It gave an example of a missionary who's name was like Bettye or some such but the natives she helped and evangelized called her something else like Bohanna. She was revered as a great person among these people she had helped. Anyway, after she retired and returned home, a girl from the "village" came to visit her, she told her that her real name was Bettye. This, for some reason, shocked and embarrassed this girl that they had called the wrong name for many years. I thought at the time...so what?
But apparently the author thought it was a big deal that we were calling Jesus something that he would never have recognized when he was here on earth. (There is no J sound in aramaic/hebrew I guess)

I've gotten that impression too.
I think it tends to put people off more than impress them favorably. Even if that's not the intent, it seems to be the effect it has on most folks raised in a country where Christ is commonly referred to as Jesus. And I'm darn sure that Jesus knows who we're talking about when we say "Jesus" even if it's not what his Jewish contemporaries would have called Him.I have been honored as an Enemy of Nee™ and LAu Tzu hasn't!

Re: Calling Jesus Yeshua
hi romans:
aside from messianic jews, there is a group of people who use the name "Yehshua." check out some reading on the Sacred Name Movement. this may be what you're about to encounter.
well...
i don't think it has much to do with feeling holy or honorable. i think it has everything to do with the culture we live in, where christianity has so many faces that nobody knows who is genuine anymore. these people just want something genuine. can you blame them?

Re: Calling Jesus Yeshua
is it unnecessary and religious to know where you stand on the calvinism/arminianism debate?
i think, quite the contrary, that this is a necessary topic for western christianity.
have you ever thought about it? what if the messiah truly cares whether you call him "jesus" or "yehshua"? if you found sufficient scriptural grounds for believing that it mattered to him, would you still call it unnecessary and religious? these folks feel that scripture is clear on the topic, and they are doing their best to honor him.
that's far more than we can say for a good number of professing christians in our culture.

Re: Calling Jesus Yeshua
Why are we talking about calvinism and arminianism? Total Non sequitur to me.
I think Christians have bigger issues to concern ourselves over.i think, quite the contrary, that this is a necessary topic for western christianity.
If Jesus isn't that concerned about me putting cheese on my hamburger or whether I'm circumcised or not, I sincerely doubt he cares if I call him Jesus or Yeshua. Jesus' whole ministry was concerned with getting people over their hangups on legalism and getting to the heart of issues. I think Jesus knows my heart when I call on his name and I say "Jesus" rather than "Yeshua". I think the scripture bears this out as well. But if people want to get all hung up on semantics, then let them... people need to feel they're going the extra mile sometimes. That's fine. Occasionally I even call Jesus Yeshua in prayer and praise while magnifying his name.have you ever thought about it? what if the messiah truly cares whether you call him "jesus" or "yehshua"? if you found sufficient scriptural grounds for believing that it mattered to him, would you still call it unnecessary and religious? these folks feel that scripture is clear on the topic, and they are doing their best to honor him.

Re: Calling Jesus Yeshua
I have to add that my salvation comes through faith (that is trust and dependence) on Jesus/Yeshua not from the way I say His name.
He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8)

Re: Calling Jesus Yeshua
I'm currently in a church that heavily emphasizes the importance of understanding our "Hebraic roots," as the "grafted in seed of Abraham." We support Israel (spelled "Yisrael," in Jewish circles). We have a Messianic service on the first Friday of each month where the praise and worship is distinctly Jewish, the Torah is read in both Hebrew and English, and the speakers are Messianic Jews. In these services, Jesus is exclusively referred to as "Yeshua," and God, "Adonai." Sometimes, we refer to Jesus as "Yeshua HaMashiach," (Jesus, the Messiah, or the Christ.").
In this context, I have found a dimension of worship that I have enjoyed deeply and felt exhilarated and humbled by. This is one of the things I appreciate most about a church I'm actually on the brink of leaving. However, I do find it a bit pompous and inappropriate to go running around the streets throwing the name, "Yeshua," around in non-Jewish company.
