  • Need MAC Help

I'm purdy durn proficient at all things computer with the major exception - I don't do Mac.

My wife as a Mac All-in-one, and I think her hard drive crashed. Won't boot up.
I have no problem replacing the hard drive, but where do I get the OS? I don't think it came with any recovery or install disk.

She uses a Mac at home because she's a graphics specialist and uses a Mac at work.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

it should have come with an OS disc. Maybe she lost it? How old is it? You might have to go buy the OS to reinstall it.

Have you tried booting the hard drive in an external enclosure to see if it is the actual drive not working and not the controller? Or even if it is bad, if it runs, cloning it and then seeing if you can get the data off of it?

I actually got it to boot by holding the shift key -- it took a while, but it booted and is up and running. (Watched a youtube video)

Are there free disk check utilities for the Mac? (I know nothing Mac-ish, except I avoid them )

My suggested course of action is that you resume your policy of avoiding Macs and tell Mrs CP that she will only get free tech support from you if she moves away from using a Mac

Sounds like a solid plan to me!

I actually managed to get the thing up and running, downloaded software updates, and, I guess it's good to go.... for her.

Macs do not come with an OS DVD anymore, unfortunately. However, you should be able to boot the Mac from the hidden recovery partition of the drive (hold down Command-R on startup) and reinstall the OS (assuming the drive isn't dead). You can also run Disk Utility in that mode to repair the disk.
