Y'all go right ahead with your flamewar. Give us non-Christians (and the uncertain Christians here) a real good look at the "brotherly love" and the "Oneness of the Body of Christ."

Re: A Wiccan Speaks" Catholic/Protestant/Orthodox flamewars
I thought things have been pretty civil considering some of the anti-catholic/anti-protestant garbage that has been written and posted on the net. At the end of the day everyone who is professing to follow Christ has a lot in common despite some fierce disagreements.
"Thou hast learnt the way, how in the judgment thou mayest be found among those on the right hand; guard that which is committed to thee concerning Christ, and be conspicuous in good works, that thou mayest stand with a good confidence before the Judge, and inherit the kingdom of heaven:—Through whom, and with whom, be glory to God with the Holy Ghost, for ever and ever. Amen" -St Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lecture XV
"All those who find rest within the material world and are not troubled about the salvation of their soul resemble the foolish young birds that don't make commotion inside their egg, so as to break the shell and come out to enjoy the sun (to soar inot the Heavens of the paradisiacal life). Rather, they remain motionless and die within their eggshell." -Elder Paisos

The slap Xena made against MetalMark was ... well, considering her normal behavior, it was along the lines of a kick in the crotch. And Furey, for all that I consider him one of my friends here, should be ashamed of his latest.
Sometimes it's not the actual text, but the subtext--and in this, the subtext is vicious.
As a former Christian, I used to believe that. But when the animosity leaps up this easily (especially considering the propaganda--dare I say "lies"--repeated on both sides), I beg leave to doubt that your statement is correct. At the end of the day everyone who is professing to follow Christ has a lot in common despite some fierce disagreements.Life sometimes needs to be grabbed by the throat and beaten with a lead pipe. ~ Sir Longpost, a good friend of mine.

Re: A Wiccan Speaks" Catholic/Protestant/Orthodox flamewars
Well, Justin, as much as I love you and respect you, after your recent behaviour here, you are being just a tad hypocritical, aren't you? And instead of just talking about "lies" why don't you point out where someone has told a lie by using the report post button. You can't just make a statement like you made about all the "lies" without substantiation.
Why are we not allowed to defend what we believe, and what we believe to be error?
We are human, things get hot. The internet isn't the best place for discussions of this sort, because we don't have access to facial expression or vocal inflection.
But we do the best we can. Yes, we need to do better, and be less abrasive.
But your little thread here just adds fuel to the fire, and you have no one to blame but yourself.

Re: A Wiccan Speaks" Catholic/Protestant/Orthodox flamewars
Dee Dee isn't Catholic or Orthodox, so what she said to MetalMark has nothing to do with the flamewar you claim exists.
And when it comes down to it, we like each other, and we have quite a bit in common. We just differ when it come to Ecclesiology (and a few other doctrines but Ecclesiology is the really big one) and it's not something we can compromise on. But people here are generally pretty nice about things. As a collective group I think we get flamed more by the protestant side of things than we do by each other.
Vehemently disagreeing on who the True Church is does not flaming make necessarily
And I haven't seen a thread specifically on (or derailed onto) that topic here for a while.
ETA: forgive me, I could swear that the title of the thread was just Catholic/Orthodox before. If it wasn't then blame it being late, and I shouldn't be posting. What I said still stands for the EO/RC folks anywayLast edited by candlesandfish; August 29th 2008 at 01:39 PM.

Re: A Wiccan Speaks" Catholic/Protestant/Orthodox flamewars
And really, what does this thread have to do with this forum anyway? Justin is a Wiccan, yes, and the title has the word "Wiccan" in it, but we know it has nothing to do with the discussion of Wicca/Neo-Paganism.
Should have taken it to the Boiler Room/Locker Room/whatever it's called now.

Err, he included "Protestant" in his indictment.

Am I? Is it hypocritical to point out where false statements are made, when I have (to the best of my knowledge) made no false statements? Is it hypocritical to call Christians to behave as their god dictates, when I behave as my Gods dictate?
The reason I did not use the "report post" button is two-fold:
1: An error is not a lie. While it is questionable whether those who hurl the accusation of "idolatry" and Maryolatry" on the one side, or "heretic" on the other, are actually in error--considering the number of times they've been offered correction and refused or ignored it--error is still not a lie, and it behooves us to give the benefit of the doubt.
2: Lies--even when they have been evidenced and substantiated as lies--are not against the forum rules. If a lie is told here, it is not removed; substantiated exposure of the statement as a lie is not removed; the only thing that is removed/censured is unsubstantiated accusation.
In any event, my use of the word "lie" is more rhetorical than accusatory. I do honestly and sincerely believe that both sides have lost track of their tempers, and are simply lashing out at this point.
There is a grave difference between "defending what you believe" and engaging in abusive behavior. I can--and have, many times on this forum--give a defense of what I believe, while never once making a false statement, an insult, or acting against the commandments of my faith. And I can--and have--lost my temper here, and engaged in abusive behavior. The latter is wrong: I've apologized publicly, and done my best to amend my behavior. The former is not only morally right, but commendable. Why are we not allowed to defend what we believe, and what we believe to be error?
If a critic from the outside cannot tell Christians when they are factually wrong, morally wrong, or just plain screwing up when they are actually doing so, then you might as well close forum membership to non-Christians. Bluntly and plainly, both sides have dropped the ball. If you have a problem with a non-Christian pointing that out, then perhaps the applicable conversations should be held in private, instead of before the eyes of the world. But your little thread here just adds fuel to the fire, and you have no one to blame but yourself.Life sometimes needs to be grabbed by the throat and beaten with a lead pipe. ~ Sir Longpost, a good friend of mine.
