Lawmakers will hire someone within a week to investigate whether Governor Sarah Palin abused her power in firing Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. The legislative council approved 100,000 dollars for the investigation that will find out whether Palin was angry at Monegan for not firing an Alaska State Trooper who went through a messy divorce with Palin's sister.

On Monday afternoon, the Joint Legislative Council, filled with Republicans and Democrats, voted 12 to 0 to formally call for an investigation against Governor Palin in a manner—that they are stressing—will be unbiased and done in a timely fashion.

Governor Palin has denied the accusations, saying she replaced Monegan

.......... "What really remains is the most significant hurdle," said Representative Jay Ramras, a Republican from Fairbanks. "Are those professionals going to feel compelled to be subpoenaed before they will speak candidly about what they know?"

Senator French is the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman and is in charge of hiring the investigator. He says he has a short list of candidates and that the investigation should be finished within a few months.

Sarah Palin may be the greatest thing since "sliced-bread," but why pick an abscure candidate who is already under government investigation for abuse of power focusing on the firing of the "Alaskan Safety Commissioner" for his refusal to dismiss a statetrooper who is her former brother-in-law?

At best this "on-going" investigation will an unpleasant distraction during the Presidential Campaign, at worst it could totally discredit McCain for his lack of judgment.

Well, maybe Sen. McCain understands this little, over looked, principle of law, that you seem to not be aware of. In the U.S.A. we like to call it, "Presumption of Innocence." Just a hunch though.

The funny part is that the guy pressing the issue admits Palin had nothing to do with it, only one of her lower-level people from the governor's office did. The other issue is that the guy fired was not correctly performing his job.

Libs and conservatives alike are all making some pretty silly statements. I guess that's part and parcel for an election year. Its hard to get to the meat with issues like this and who is or isn't a smoker are getting air time. (Though an investigation for abuse of power is sort of a big deal even if it isn't true because its such a waste of resources.)

I'm sure if Joe Biden was currently under investigation for abuse of power, the Republicans would have been conent to consider him "presumed innocent - till proven guilty" during the Democratic Convention.

First off, that first sentence makes no sense.

Second off, as a Republican, I'd have no problem voting to see if someone in my party did abuse power. I'd want to know. If they did, then we deal with them. If they didn't, all the better.

To my knowledge, John McCain is the first presidential candidate in American history, to knowingly select a running-mate who was cuurently undergoing a government investigation of his/her ethics.

The premise of technomage's "rhetorical" question is that anyone bringing attention to the fact that McCain's chose to select a vp candidate who is currently under government investigation - is already guilty of indulging in "dirty politics."

Did McCain KNOW/CARE that Sarah Palin is currently under investigation for ABUSE OF POWER? is a valid question deserving of a valid response - not "amateurish" attempts to "bait and switch."
