But was this a Roman trial or a Jewish one? The Romans may have had different legal requirements.
It would really be helpful if you used the quote function, as it provides hyperlinks that can take us back to the original content. Often, there's context there that's necessary.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

What actual example/s from the period are you using to to make that assertion?
For one example, that's how days on the calender were called. The Kalends was the first day of each month. So the Kalends of February was February 1st. And the last days of the previous month were referred to by their relation to the following Kalends. Thus:

"January 30 was dies tertius ante Kal. Feb. [literally "the third day before February 1st"] (the third day back in the row -- 30, 31, 1)."

Oh, midday is 12 pm, I thought it was 12 am ...

Either way, the line between 6th and 7th hours at midday was the one constant regardless of season. The rest is true at equinox, either of them, twice a year with surrounding weeks. In Rome, this system means an hour varies between 45 and 75 equinoctial minutes, or 3 and 5 quarters of an equinoctial hour in length.

It was a Hebrew sham trial and then a Roman giving in to hysterics despite trying to make a trial.
