      Re: West Saxon Gospels

Back when I studied Anglo-Saxon at uni, we talked about them some, but we didn't have to read them (for whatever reason, the course focused mostly on A/S poetry). My A/S is now so rusty, and I no longer have my textbooks or dictionary, that I'd have to read them in translation, which probably defeats the purpose.

Is there a good translation you'd recommend?

      Re: West Saxon Gospels

Well, I don't have a translation, but I have a Gospel of John, ca. 1904, that I am trying to transcribe. It's fascinating for a number of reasons: 1st, that it is the only copy I could find on the internet (hence the transcription), and 2nd that it includes liturgical direction (i.e. ţis gospel scćl be redden on...).

Do you recall why they came-up for discussion in class?

      Re: West Saxon Gospels

Not really; I think it was probably when we were discussing dialects in Anglo-Saxon, and whether or not later English dialects derived from A/S dialects.
