To me, there is no difference and both are clearly suicide. This Muslims' example of martyrdom was certainly approved of by Muhammad, therefore, modern Muslim suicide bombers have historical justification for their actions.

You, like the delusional suicide bombers, fail to take into account the condition that in order to be a martyr, one needs to be killed by the enemy. Suicide bombers are not killed by their enemy. Rather, they kill themselves even before the adversary can get to them. Hence, their action doesn't constitute martyrdom, and it is, therefore, haram.

As for the hadith you quoted, have you read their commentaries?
