The word translated "modestly" appears exactly once in the NT, in 1 Tim. 2:9, and the context has nothing to do with "skimpiness" of clothing. Just FWIW.

I think it's sort of funny you're worried about having dressed up too much, when I used to go to church with my deathhawk a foot off my head, and lots of black and leather. About a couple months in it occured to me that people might be distracted by the deathhawk (I'm not a smart fellow), and started wearing it down. Good thing my girlfriend and I usually sat towards the back so I wasn't one of those tall hat in the theater type guys. Same church, which is mixed black and white, a lot of black women would wear those crazy hats, but I think the Pastor put an end to that cause that got toned down eventually. Other black churches I've been to, they really get into who can wear the most ridiculous looking hat. Couple of the black guys used to wear some amazing suits too. Bright red, or purple or whatever. I loved those things. One day I'm gonna buy my own. I never thought they were that distracting though. Just how some people dress.

Probably really depends on the church what is considered appropriate attire. I'm not usually one to attend a church that gets real finicky on that sort of thing though. Finickiness tends to be a symptom of other issues in my experience, particularly in evangelism. I've been to some old mainline churches where appropriate dress is an unspoken mandate. They're usually dead, and lifeless, and once the oldtimers start dying off, no one is left to fill the pews.

I was visiting a Church once while on vacation, and happened to sit in the back behind a guy who had a tall deathhawk, but he also had those ear rings with the HUGE hole in the ear lobe. Before I knew it, I was rather enjoying watching the Pastor preach while I was looking through the "window" of this guy's left earlobe.

For the record, while I have my ears pierced up, I think stretched piercings are gross. I'd still probably date someone with them, but not my cup of tea. I think it's one of those fads that we're on the other side of now.

Paul just tells women to dress modestly (in general), because materialism is a common fault of women. You're being legalistic about it.

I suppose I posted this thread because, being an adult and father and whatnot, I'm way more of a self-centered scumbag than I ever realized. I was wondering if this was another example of that.
I think you are being too harsh on yourself.

Doesn't look like you're doing anything wrong in this case.

I'm not quite sure what he means by that either. Probably best let him explain.

Actually, this thread has made me think of something else:

I like heavy metal. On occasion, I like to wear heavy metal t-shirts. To be sure, there are some shirts I won't wear (for what are probably obvious reasons--use your imagination), but there are a bunch of...rather eye-catching shirts that I like to wear. Part of the reason I like them is people's confused reaction to them. They've never seen a shirt like that before, and it confuses them. I find this amusing. Here's an example of a shirt I recently told my wife I like, and would totally wear.

If my purpose in wearing the shirt is to draw attention to myself, this would seem to make it inappropriate, right?

Please note that I'm speaking purely of myself here, and my own motivations. I don't care much what other people wear and don't concern myself with their reasons for wearing whatever it is.
I DENOUNCE DONALD J. TRUMP AND ALL HIS IMMORAL ACTS.

Or not. He's one to talk about legalism...
