Archeology 201 Guidelines

If Indiana Jones happened to be a member of Tweb, this is where he'd hang out.

Welcome to the Archeology forum. Were you out doing some gardening and dug up a relic from the distant past? would you like to know more about Ancient Egypt? Did you think Memphis was actually a city in Tennessee?

Well, for the answers to those and other burning questions you've found the right digs.

Our forum rules apply here too, if you haven't read them now is the time.

Surprisingly they're very affordable. 3rd and 4th centuries aren't typically that valuable because they're so abundant, but the fact that these are mint, and probably include lots of higher denominations probably helps in that evaluation. Another link I found says they found 1,300 pounds of these suckers in that dig. Hope the construction workers got to take a few home.

A long time ago, I chatted with a.coin seller at our local mall. He showed me a coin supposedly from the Ptolemic(sp?) Era. Thinking back, the fact that he let me hold it kind makes me doubtful, but who knows.

No, it was likely real. I have something from that era. As you can see, this one from 170-164 BC with Zeus on the obverse, and two eagles on the reverse only put me back $70 (was in a sale, but still). It's one of the few hobbies that your average Joe can get into and actually handle real artifacts dating back centuries.
