Re: Hebrew word for sphere
The closest I know of in biblical/classical Hebrew is the word used for 'ball' in Isaiah 22:18.
See here.

סְפֶרָה SFiRaH.

Sphere Is an interesting movie in which Sharon Stone crossed over from porn-star to being a respected co-star of Dustin Hoffman. I think Queen Latifah - was it her in there as the Navy tech?
Hemisphere הֶמִיסְפֶרָה hemisfirah.
Not to be confused with ספרה enumeration, which is an original Hebrew/Arabic/Aramaic word from the root ספר.
SFeR = count, recount, make an account
SiFRaH = digit
SFiRaH (pl=SeFiRoT) = the 10 dimensions/enumeration of Qabalah
SeFeR = scroll, book
Beit SeFeR = school
סְפֶרָה SFiRaH = sphere seems like a word borrowed from English, like telephone טַלְפָּן TaLPaN.
Is there any chance that the Greek sphaira is borrowed from Arabic/Hebrew SFR? I checked the dictionary that sphere originates from Greek sphaira. But one never knows - is there possibility that sphaira came from SFR? Just as alcohol and chemistry are actually of middle-eastern origins.
Could it be possible that the Greek sphaira could be due to Arabic/Jewish-Greek cross cultural interaction, because a SFiRaH in Qabalah is also known as sphere/level of awareness? Any linguistic experts on this word?

Re: Hebrew word for sphere
I think that MortalCoil's question in the OP seeks to ascertain whether or not there is a word meaning "sphere" in the text of the Hebrew scriptures.
סלח לנו has provided a rather interesting response that combines both modern and classical/biblical Hebrew word meanings, without clearly distinguishing which is which.
Just for clarity relative to the question in the OP, of the Hebrew words cited by סלח לנו, the only one that occurs in the Bible is סִפְרָה , which is defined in HALOT thus:
סִפְרָה : fem. of I סֵפֶר , Sam.ספרות writing, i.e. the Torah, cf. Syr.: בְּסִפְרָתֶךָ : meanings — 1. book, the record book in Heaven (BArm. סְפַר Dan 7:10) Ps 56:9. [Ps 56:8. in English versions -JR]; —2. expertise in literary records (→ סֹפֵר 4) Sir 44:4 (margin and SirMvii10 for מספרת). †Last edited by John Reece; January 26th 2009 at 09:51 AM.
