I think that's inevitable no matter who's in. There seem to be really strong forces over both Ukraine and Syria (coming from both US and EU sources) that are unwilling to renege whatever the agenda is they have there. US/Russia hot confrontation is probably just a whole lot more of a smoother probability with an actual historically proven warmonger.

Would be miracle if it didn't.

But somehow Trump locker room talk from 10+years ago is the important thing!!!

No. I don't think Russia or the US is stupid enough to start a war against the other. Too much firepower and too little benefit.

Never underestimate the ability of governments to get into a proxy war that escalates beyond what they intended. We are very much on opposite sides in Syria. And there is a lot of anti-American sentiment in Russia right now (has been for a few years).

Not directly, no. A proxy war already seems in the works though.

Yeah, a war between the US and Russia is my single biggest worry about a Clinton presidency. She's such a hawk. If it came down to it (and if I was American) that would be the one final thing that would prevent me voting for Clinton in the ballot box. Because I would imagine a nuclear apocalypse and think "well, at least if I don't vote for Clinton I could die happy in the knowledge that I wasn't morally responsible for causing it".

The fact that the US has consistently shown weakness despite tough talk almost guarantees it.

What do you see as the reason for that?

I genuinely have no idea. She as a person appears to have a cold-war mentality. She regards Henry Kissenger (one of the architects of cold-war-based foreign policy and a war criminal) as her mentor. I don't understand why she would listen to someone like that, it just seems insane. She seems set to turn back the clock 40 years on US-Russia relations, and has the cold-war idea of seeing the world as a global chessboard on which the US and Russia are the players and each move they make with their proxies around the world has to be countered by the other players proxies. It's an absolutely horrible mentality which completely ignores the rights and wellbeing of the people in the countries in which the two of them are having their proxy wars. The two countries did substantial damage to large parts of the world during the cold war with their awful proxy wars and coups and chessboard moves. It's horrible, and it terrifies me to see it in Clinton.

I suspect that part of what is behind this recent up-scaling of tensions with Russia is that the US military is now confident it has overwhelming supremacy over Russia. The US's Iron Dome system in Israel has proven itself capable of reliably shooting down missiles, so the US powers that be are no longer worried about a nuclear war with Russia because they know they can just shoot down all the Russian missiles. So they feel no strong incentive not to be aggressive, because there's no Mutually Assured Destruction anymore. Likewise they have poured billions into developing their cyber-warfare capabilities and are an order of magnitude ahead of what other countries have in this regard. Russia has a few script kiddies doing hacks, China has a couple of groups and some of their state-run companies selling pre-compromised hardware, but we saw with Stuxnet that the US is just leagues ahead with capabilities the others could only dream of, and we know from some of the leaks that the Americans have compromised almost every kind of hardware there is. I suspect the US powers that be would quite like to show off their cyber powers against Russia to cower the rest of the world and remind everyone who's in charge to establish the pecking order in international negotiations.

So, how do you account for her goofy "reset (overcharge) button" photo op with the Russians?

I don't know - I think the success has been overplayed, and our military knows that.
