I think he pretty much has to defend himself against the charges. If he does nothing then he is implicitly admitting that they could be true. And the ones making the accusations are the ones who have to prove they are true. Which I don't see how they could unless they happened to record it somehow at the time or have believable witnesses. So as unpleasant as it is, him suing them is the fastest way to make them go away and to discourage anyone else from making unfounded accusations.
Of course if the accusations are true, then he would be taking a big risk in suing them. If they do have evidence, he could be opening up a YUGE can of worms.
