  • Windows 7 Service Pack 2

I just discovered today, during my Internet travels, that earlier this year Microsoft decided to release what they call a "convenience update rollup" full of the 200+ updates that they released for Windows 7 since they put out Service Pack 1 through April 2016. Although they're not calling it such, it's basically the equivalent of a Service Pack 2. However, they're not making it available through the regular Windows Update client; it's only available through the Windows Update Catalog.

More information in the link below, for anyone interested.

Personally, I'm glad to see that Microsoft has done this -- because the last two times I had to reinstall Windows 7 on my own compy I had an awful time with Windows Update at first, having to let it auto-install all the initial updates in the background so I couldn't see its progress. It'll be good to be able to do all that offline next time.

Ahhh, but you have to install the first "convenience pack" (April 2015) before you can run that one. And to do that, you need to download it from microsoft using IE (because that particular page insists on using ActiveX). And if you do a refresh of Win7SP1 it gives you IE8.....which MS will not allow to browse their site.....so you have to download the stand alone installers for IE10.

(I've literally just been through this the last fortnight trying to sort out my sister-in-law's laptop ... complicated by the fact I was doing it all via Teamviewer as she lives in Cape Town, South Africa and I am in New Zealand. I gave up on the Convenience Packs and managed to upgrade to Windows 10)

Thanks for that link to further clarify; I forgot to mention that having SP1 installed (as well as the "servicing stack update") is a prerequisite and that the rollup doesn't include updates to Internet Explorer. Your link explains it all better than mine does.

Just to mention, my sister-in-laws laptop had the further complication that it had viruses on it (from having someone install a keygen for Adobe Photoshop) that had corrupted the IE install on there, those dll's are used by Windows Update, which is why I had to, after getting rid of the viruses, resort to refreshing Windows 7 back to SP1 (and couldn't to a proper wipe and re-install because needed to keep teamviewer running)

That looks like an interesting way to do it. Last time I reinstalled and updated my own compy I stumbled across Windows Updates Downloader and tried it, but I might keep your link in mind to try if I ever have to again.
