Is it possible for both of those statements to be true? If it is, explain.

Now, everyone post some of your own. Let the pearls and synapses flow!
Well technically, the top sentence would be a popular saying while the bottom one would be more a scientific statement. In scientific terms, there is no cold, only heat and the only 'true cold' would be absolute zero. So it is technically right to say that it isn't cold because it's not absolute zero.

Of course, if you're using Aristotelian logic, that's crap. Maybe it was an unfair question. Hmmm.

10 pearls tomorrow. I can't send any more today, the site won't let me.

I guess my answer either shows I'm a total dork or didn't read the technical logic parts of the question.

This isn't your thread and I was right, I just didn't answer it the same way that Kelp wanted it answered.

      I vote dork.

Anywho, using boolean (computer) logic for cans 'o soda in da fridge is wacked.

Re: Brain teasers and logic puzzles.

Boolean logic is older than computers. It started IIRC because of George Boole's objection to Aristotelian existential import (an argument being automatically invalid because the premises don't refer to things that actually exist or that cannot be proven to exist).

It's just used in search engines because it works in nice clean mathematical sets.

It's alright. I might not have made the logic part clear enough. You did give a good answer, though. 5 pearls

Funny example of existential import that I saw in my textbook:

      All mammals are animals.
      All unicorns are mammals.
      Therefore all unicorns are animals.

That's a deductive argument because the conclusion would follow by definition from the premises if the premises were actually true (as opposed to induction where the conclusion only probably follows). In determining validity you assume the premises are true and merely examine their relationship to the conclusion.

In Aristotle's system this is invalid right off the bat because we know there is no such thing as a unicorn (presumably). To Aristotle, the statement "A is S" implies that there is actually an A somewhere in the universe.

To Boole though, this is invalid because the statement "All A are S" tells you nothing about whether an A actually exists. All you can say is "If there is an A, we know that this A will be an S". So we don't know in the context of the argument if there is a unicorn or a can of soda all we know is that if they are really there, they're mammals or cold.

5 pears for a right answer only (I'm poor like that)

There are 6 girls in a room.

There are 6 apples in a basket.

Each girl takes an apple, but in the end one apple is left in the basket. How?
