Not an Anime fan
Is there anyone on this forum who isn't an anime fan? I've got nothing against the fans of anime, but anime itself, the purposely bad line quality (speed lines, limited frames/sec, etc.), storylines, and character stereotypes is too much to take. When VHS copies of Japanimation first got big in the US in the 80s up to the early 90s it was really pretty interesting to see adult type themes and gore in cartoons, outside of Heavy Metal the movie and some Ralph Bakshi films nothing like that was ever really seen in the US. As the genre has progressed though, there's not a whole lot new to offer. I can't watch any of it anymore without being bored to death by oversaturation.
And why are there so many fans of anime on this forum specifically? Is it because so many people on this forum know each other? Is it because there is a huge young-ish crowd posting here? Is it because Internet Message Forums and Anime fans go together like milk chocolate and peanut butter?
If... IF... I were to start watching anime again, what's out there that's really doing something new and worth the view. Keep in mind I'm not at all interested in a series but probably a film or something. Last thing I saw that looked slightly interesting was Cowboy Beebop the movie, and I only watched that because the hype was too loud to ignore.

Then Morgoth turned upon Húrin, and he said: 'Fool, little among Men, and they are the least of all that speak! Have you seen the Valar, or measured the power of Manwë and Varda?
Do you know the reach of their thought? Or do you think, perhaps, that their thought is upon you, and that they may shield you from afar?'
'I know not,' said Húrin. 'Yet so it might be, if they willed. For the Elder King shall not be dethroned while Arda endures.'

I don't like anime for anime's sake, but if it intrigues me I'll watch it.

"My neighbor Totoro" is a good anime movie.
No, I'm not into anime, but my kids are starting to get into it.
I actually kinda like Bleach though.

I like bleach too. Naruto's better though.
"Years ago, I mean decades ago, I read a quote about politicians performing quid pro quo favors for campaign cash, and whether or not we could prove it. The guy who was quoted opined that it was difficult to determine. He noted that in many cases, the payoff might not take the form of votes on legislative action -- those might be detectable, and so are avoided -- but could take subtler forms, like the question that is never asked at a hearing.
The media's doing a terrific job of not asking questions it doesn't want to know the answer to. It doesn't ask these questions in bulk, and the great volume of questions it doesn't ask makes it cheap to not ask questions.
And it passes these savings on to you, the customer." Ace

Yeah, i've seen Spirited Away, Mononoke, and the one about the castle. I think I even owned Spirited Away (probably have it boxed up someplace). Very pretty films especially the first two, but none of them make a lick of sense really. Well they do, but they'd probably make more sense if whatever is lost in translation wasn't... lost. That and the fact that all the faces have that creepy abnormal japanamation look to them where their eyes fill up half their face. Other than those complaints they are, again, very well animated. Interesting to look at like modern art. Wouldn't mind playing them on a tv set with the sound turned off while doing something else.

Re: Not an Anime fan
Don't bother, they both fit in the genre of shonen anime and given what you have said about why you dislike anime you will find nothing of interest there.
Personally I think there are so many anime fans because internet addicts tend of have an interest in scifi and fantasy. Anime usually deals quite well with these subjects which are very hard to make tv series or movies about. Another reason is the artwork, some of us just appreciate this style of art and animation. And further some of us really like the window it gives into another culture. An lot of anime projects cultural values and relations that have a unique japanese flavour even if they are horribly overexagerated. In the same way lots of anime lovers really like hong kong movies or chinese movies for their cultural uniqueness.
If you watched anime for its 'adult' themes and gore then you have never really appreciated anime as a unique entertainment form any more than watching western movies or cartoons for their adult themes and violence would be satisfying."Thou hast learnt the way, how in the judgment thou mayest be found among those on the right hand; guard that which is committed to thee concerning Christ, and be conspicuous in good works, that thou mayest stand with a good confidence before the Judge, and inherit the kingdom of heaven:—Through whom, and with whom, be glory to God with the Holy Ghost, for ever and ever. Amen" -St Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lecture XV
"All those who find rest within the material world and are not troubled about the salvation of their soul resemble the foolish young birds that don't make commotion inside their egg, so as to break the shell and come out to enjoy the sun (to soar inot the Heavens of the paradisiacal life). Rather, they remain motionless and die within their eggshell." -Elder Paisos

Re: Not an Anime fan
My friend, you've been watching the wrong anime. As I see it, the medium of Japanese animation is a lot like the novel, really - there's a lot of really good and really bad stuff. As far as good anime titles go, some of my personal favorites are Witch Hunter Robin, Gunslinger Girl, Steamboy, Last Exile, Tsubasa, Kodocha, xxxHolic (pronounced as an accented 'holic'), Fate/Stay Night, Ghost In The Shell (everything so far), and the Read or Die. Trinity Blood is also looking quite interesting, although I haven't had a chance to watch any new episodes in quite a while.

Re: Not an Anime fan
I enjoy sci-fi and fantasy, but I generally don't watch anime for the same reason I don't watch TV or movies that often, because I don't feel like sitting down most of the time to watch it and most anime is simply not THAT interesting to me. However, one of my favorites is Cyborg Kuro Chan, for its atypical style of art and its humor. Again, I don't know what kind of stuff you'd be interested in, and the stuff I've liked you probably would not be into (mostly older animes I watched growing up). And I don't have a problem with anime as an artform when its well done.
