      The purpose of the Church

I tend to try to keep things simple. I see the Church as pretty much the same function as an armory for soldiers. A place to "regroup", be trained, enjoy fellowship, and go back into the world equipped and encouraged.

I imagine the "early church" as, not so much a place where "the gospel was preached and sinners got saved", but where people would bring their friends who ... lemme try this another way... I imagine people sharing the gospel in the marketplace and "sharing Jesus", and those people get saved... then there needs to be a place for those "new Christians" to meet the rest of their family. So the "assemblies" where a place where Christians could introduce new converts to the body of Christ, remembering that the early Church, under persecution, was somewhat "secret".

I think the purpose of the Church today is pretty much the same, but i also like to use the analogy of a hospital. Our wounded come there for care, and to be nurtured back to health. I have often heard the expression "Christians are the only army that shoots their wounded". I like NOT to be like that. If somebody has fallen, or been injured, or has backslidden, the Church should be there to help get them back on track.

So - like a hospital / armory.... a place to "regroup" to go back into the world and "be salt and light".
Well said, Eagle Pup (and welcome to Tweb)!

Then Morgoth turned upon Húrin, and he said: 'Fool, little among Men, and they are the least of all that speak! Have you seen the Valar, or measured the power of Manwë and Varda?
Do you know the reach of their thought? Or do you think, perhaps, that their thought is upon you, and that they may shield you from afar?'

'I know not,' said Húrin. 'Yet so it might be, if they willed. For the Elder King shall not be dethroned while Arda endures.'

Careful -- you can kill a man with one of those.

Those are some good principles, but I believe the church has one great purpose, to marry the Lamb. Not to disagree with you; just a reminder.

Yes, the church is the many membered body of Christ, and several other metaphors, and to add to that "the church" is not one group or denomination, but the Christians all over the world who really know Christ and are "for real", and not just play-acting or doing something religious to feel good

Gentle reminder to the newbies - if you'd like to debate any particular facet of the honored post, please do that in the original thread (which is linked to in the opening post) rather than here. Thanks.

Re: The purpose of the Church

Uy, I really liked this analogy. I can definately relate to this, considering how many churches out there serve as a refuge for many peoples for some healin'. :)
