"What Peak Oil?" http://www.zerohedge.com/news/guest-post-what-peak-oil
It makes the same points I've made before, oil is still cheap priced in gold and renewable energy keeps getting more affordable. One thing I didn't quite get to point out, though, is that known resources have increased considerably. The point that net energy gain remains favorable I also didn't quite make.

Re: Oil Problems comin' round the mountain
There is one passenger car designed for natural gas use in the USA already, the Honda Civic GX. It's estimated that nine years would be needed to recoup the extra upfront cost of the car from fuel savings. That is somewhat surprising, I thought the upfront cost would be a bit higher than that. I expect, however, the upfront cost differential will approach zero in succeeding years.

The Honda Civic GX only has about a 150 mile range...ok for around town, but here in Texas, that won't get you anywhere...

Re: Oil Problems comin' round the mountain
Not even the Metroplex and Houston?
The new shale oil fields in the USA EACH probably at least doubles the proven recoverable oil that the USA had by the end of 2010 (15Bbl). One in Texas may have more than 35Bbl recoverable. Six such fields in all, maybe more. Need we be surprised that Goldman Sachs reportedly predicted that USA daily oil production will reach an all time high by 2017.

Re: Oil Problems comin' round the mountain
Perhaps peak oil should be defined as the time when a barrel of oil or its energy equivalent (nuclear power, e.g.) is needed to extract X barrels of oil from the ground. X should be greater than 1 because crude oil needs to be refined and used (gasoline, plastics), which requires more energy input. I guess it's a bit more than 2 barrels. At the start of the oil age, the ratio was 100:1. Now it's down to 5:1 and falling rapidly.
I have only a vague idea when Peak Oil as defined above will arrive. 2020? Can someone, Glenn, throw light on this?

Peak oil is already defined as "the maximum extent of petroleum extraction." What you are discussing is the economy of oil extraction--also an important concept, but actually small change compared to the peak oil problem itself. The expense of oil extraction is a contributory issue in peak oil, but not the primary driver.

Judging from the manic attempt at linking to any and all fossils ressource news story, grmortons posts, which you've managed to bury, must have shaken you Augustine2004. More than two-thirds of the posts are from you. Have you considered cutting back and engage in dialogue rather than monologue? You could start a blog of your own where you can collect links if you want.

Non sequitor. You're babble posting, and treating a thread like your very own blog and you've done this unchallenged for pages now. Do you deny that this is what you're doing? Try scrolling up and count how often your name occurs. Go back a few pages and notice how long you've done this. In most of your posts you don't even bother quoting anyone. Its more or less killed this thread. Why the monologue?
