Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. Her philosophy in general is full of doo doo, in my opinion.

I haven't really changed that much since I was an atheist. I just believe in one more god than you now.

Depends on whether you're a poop half-empty or poop half-full person.
...the compass of existence held more than my text-books had revealed, more than I had ever dreamed of. In short I lost my superiority, and this, though I was not then aware of it, is the first step towards finding God.-A.J. Cronin

Re: 10 Books That Screwed Up the World - And 5 Others That Didn't Help

Ok, so there's an obvious elephant in this particular room, as far as atheists are concerned so here goes...

Some books that screwed up the world in no particular order:-

      The Bible/Torah etc.
      The Koran
      The Book of Mormon
      Tripitaka canon
      The Upanishads
      Guru Granth Sahib
      Daodejing

      (to name but a few)

A series of books that seem only to have screwed-up some Americans:-

      The 'Left Behind' Series

The above I'd add to the list, but only after deleting Wiker's choices!

I wouldn't advocate burning them or anything obviously, although I think there might be grounds for age-restricting some of them like DVDs!

Re: 10 Books That Screwed Up the World - And 5 Others That Didn't Help

That's as obvioius as a fundy Christian saying:

      The God Delusion
      God is Not Great
      Letter to a Christian Nation
      Against All Gods
      etc, etc, etc.

...and claiming these books screw up (or have the potential to screw up) the world because of their anti-religious polemic.

Geography Club by Brent Hartinger, and any gay teen propaganda fiction for that matter.
The Last Safe Place on Earth by Richard Peck. It was supposed to be a book about censorship in libraries, but it used alot of stereotyping and was just another example of liberal propaganda.

How about The Protocols of the Elders of Zion? A hoax and forgery, but still a book.

      Hi Moose.

Sure it's obvious. That's why I called it an elephant in the room.

However, I doubt if Dawkins, Harris, Hitchens et al have reached anything like the number of readers who've encountered the books on my list, or that they ever will.

Edit: The Protocols of the Elders of Zion certainly deserves its place on this list.

There is no way Descartes belongs on that list. I second the Salinger suggestion, disagree heartily with the Dostoevsky pick, and raise you one Jane Austen.

Don't get me wrong; Austen was a great author. But c'mon, Mr. Darcy has been a blight for men-seeking-women since that novel came out. It's obnoxious to see how many women fantasize over their real-life Mr. Darcy, and I got one thing to say to you: HE AINT COMING, so you better learn to settle for Queequeg 'cuz you ain't exactly Elizabeth yourself.

      Anything recommended by Oprah.

If it's recommended by Oprah, it can't be good.
1 Corinthians 2:14 The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.

"I recall your earliest lessons. You fell from one thousand feet during the walk of death, which, alone, was odd enough at your age, but you made short work of the walk of maiming and the walk of intense discomfort and tore your head clean off. I comforted you, well, your head, saying that you could just walk if off, because, you know, the cut was clean and then you would punch a mountain. In space!" -Master Li, Jade Empire

Liberal fascism should be on the list. Technically it won't screw up the entire earth, because its rubbish, and to believe the logic employed in it, would be like believing that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.

Why is the decent of man on this list. The series of books on evolution by charles darwin, are pretty much the bedrock of modern biology. The good this has done for medicine and for our understanding of ecology etc can hardly be under estimated and is; orders of magnitudes higher than what the percieved negative spread of atheism could do

Rand suffered from the same problem that afflicted Marx--they looked at the economics, but forgot that human motives and human behavior is the main driving force of the economic "engine."
