Yeah, I know the sticklers will claim Cardozo was the first, but he never identified as Hispanic.

Because he, like many OTHER minorities, got there on their MERIT. This was before the focus on quotas.

Walter Williams used to fill in for Rush Limbaugh on occasion. You probably know that he's a black economist and an outstanding conservative.
I love it when Williams tells his listeners - "I have the satisfaction of knowing that I EARNED my place in society, because it was before all this 'affirmative action' stuff... young black people today don't know if they actually earned their status, or if they got promoted because they are black."
