Disturbing, playful, clever, and definitely compelling.

      Re: I love this poem

      Another one to cry by

      A Passing Bell

      MOURNFULLY to and fro, to and fro the trees are waving;
What did you say, my dear?
The rain-bruised leaves are suddenly shaken, as a child
Asleep still shakes in the clutch of a sob-
      Yes, my love, I hear.

One lonely bell, one only, the storm-tossed afternoon is braving,
      Why not let it ring?
The roses lean down when they hear it, the tender, mild
Flowers of the bleeding-heart fall to the throb-
It is such a little thing!

A wet bird walks on the lawn, call to the boy to come and look,
      Yes, it is over now.
Call to him out of the silence, call him to see
The starling shaking its head as it walks in the grass-
      Ah, who knows how?

He cannot see it, I can never show it him, how it shook-
      Don’t disturb him, darling.
-Its head as it walked: I can never call him to me,
Never, he is not, whatever shall come to pass.
No, look at the wet starling.

      ~ D.H. Lawrence. 1885-1930

      Re: I love this poem

I like to read the counterpoints of that one separately and then together.

Lawrence has a way of keeping a meaning just in sight but just out of grasp, like a memory. A definite set of feelings and images are evoked, but they are immune to dissection and analysis.

Here's a great couplet from Lawrence:

Rabbits, handfuls of brown earth, lie
Low-rounded on the mournful grass they have bitten down to the quick.

That is pretty awesome. I bought a compilation of Duffy's poems, might have to do so for Lawrence as well.

Never thought I would be a poetry fan.

My parents and teachers got me hooked on poetry early on, but it took a long time for me to start liking modern poetry. Now, along with the short forms like haiku and lunes, modern poetry -- especially free verse -- is my favorite.

I think my favorite poet is probably Wallace Stevens, but he's pretty difficult. I've only been able to really "get" a few of his poems. I also like Kenneth Fearing, Elizabeth Bishop, and H.D. (Hilda Doolittle).

My favorite online resources for poetry are:

      The Poetry Foundation

      and

Poets.org (the Academy of American Poets)

I just finished listening to a compilation of her works and on the whole it was pretty awesome. Very dark and moody.

I suppose you're trying to be ridiculous but it's still interesting (not pretty, but pretty interesting...) John Rambo's style of critiquing an American pedophile in Burma is to remove his trachea. It doesn't lend a "feel-good" ambiance to the reading of the haiku.

Which it is, BTW: one of the classic forms of haiku. (5-7-5) I especially enjoy the remark about John Rambo being a literary critic (by Rushing Jews.) Close, but incorrect. Best that could be said is that John Rambo is a social critic.

Remember that ogres are like onions in that they both have layers:

Shrek: For your information, there's a lot more to ogres than people think.
      Donkey: Example?
Shrek: Example... uh... ogres are like onions!
      Donkey: They stink?
      Shrek: Yes... No!
Donkey: Oh, they make you cry?
      Shrek: No!
Donkey: Oh, you leave 'em out in the sun, they get all brown, start sproutin' little white hairs...
Shrek: NO! Layers. Onions have layers. Ogres have layers. Onions have layers. You get it? We both have layers.

Love the truth; follow it no matter where it leads; embrace it no matter how much it costs; accept no substitutes; and be satisfied with nothing less than the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

The Lord Jesus Christ is the Perfect Embodiment of the Truth; Love and follow Him!

"Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me." (John 14:6)
