I think this translation is the best, it is similar to the king James in its translation, which is highly celebrated, only in modern English, so you can understand what it is actually saying.
Even though it is not a study bible, that translation would be good to have.

If you read Koine Greek, the Novum Testamentum Graece (aka Nestle-Aland 27) is, hands down, the best place to start.
If you do not read Greek, try the New International Version or the Nw American Standard Bible.
And if you can afford to really splurge on your library, the Anchor Bible Dictionary cannot be beat.

Re: Recommend a good study Bible
The NASB was recommended to me by a greek scholar for its fidelity to the original majority text. Getting at as an interlinear is a bonus.

Study Bible!

For a word for word study, I believe the Interlinear is tops, and for thought for thought, I guess it would have to be the Message Bible.

Re: Recommend a good study Bible
RB,
Do you use the A m p l i f i e d Bible much ?
I had a copy YEARS ago, and my producer loved using his (with all the extra words in [ ... ] ) If you have a spare, I would happily relieve you of your copy.
There was actually a band (early Jesus music) called, 'Amplified Version'...I think I have a copy somewhere in my archives.
While I was searching for an online 'Reformation Study Bible', I stumbled over a really great resourse at Bibles.net - It seems every time I go a searching, I find a new resourse, or some new translation.
Any thoughts about 'The International Standard Version' ? I used if for a bit, and it seemed quite good.
One I have been trying to get is 'The Defined King James Bible'. ...
I guess in the end, 'Alexander Scourby' hypnotized me and there is nothing I can do. ... I tried listening to the NIV on tape, but it scared my socks off....
Shalom,
HH

Re: Recommend a good study Bible
When I was still a Christian, I spent a lot of time looking into English translations and settled on the NASB. It shows a good blend of readable modern English, critical use of manuscripts, and a low degree of interpretation-while-translating.
KJV is famous and a landmark in English literature, but its manuscript basis is terrible. NIV is very popular but is particularly bad about interpretation-while-translating.
Secondarily, I highly recommend the JPS Tanakh. This is a good, modern Jewish translation. Two advantages here: you get to see what happens when Jews instead of Christians translate these texts and I guarantee you'll find the typographical choices interesting. The overall flow tends to beat Christian Old Testaments layouts.

Re: Recommend a good study Bible
You say you were a Christian, do you mean you were a Christian in the sense that the Apostle Paul taught, or were you just nominal. (You know a member of the Christian Religion, or some demonination, group, cult etc.) If it is the former, then I personally don't believe the term ex-Christian fits.
So many use the name Christian but all they did was have a sampling of the pudding but did not give 'all their heart' to Jesus.
The NASB is one of the better word for word study Bibles, but I believe that the Interlinear is a better word for word study Bible. (Then my choices are not up to date with the latest Scholarship...for that check with John Reece, in Languages 301)
It is based on earlier manuscripts, but as to whether it is more accurate than the later or not, is still a matter of debate among those who debate it. It's still a great read. To often the modernish styles, are just horrible to read. I mean HORRIBLE!KJV is famous and a landmark in English literature, but its manuscript basis is terrible.
Ooooo...yes, it is 'ORRIBLE.NIV is very popular but is particularly bad about interpretation-while-translating.
However it is still not a bad to read. It flows quite well, and I enjoyed reading Timothy (years ago.....)
Have you studied Hebrew ?Secondarily, I highly recommend the JPS Tanakh. This is a good, modern Jewish translation. I have done a year, with an actual Rabbi. It was great fun, and I am hoping to pick it up here again in the UK. Just to find a Rabbi that has a tender spot for the New Testament.
I started getting in the verbs and have spent a bit of time on hebrew4christians.
The Spirit in me has a love for the Israel of God. I cannot explain that, but I guess it must be something to do with my Jewish Master Y'shua.

btw. Have you considered updating your details. Who are you ? lol.

Re: Recommend a good study Bible
I mean personal faith, not just social membership.
I'll let the Christians handle the debate on manuscripts. I will point out that the KJV style is an Early Modern English literary creation, and has absolutely nothing to do with the Bible as it was written. We have cultural associations, but it's the same as recognizing "Church" architecture or Chapter and Verse formatting. It is based on earlier manuscripts, but as to whether it is more accurate than the later or not, is still a matter of debate among those who debate it. It's still a great read. To often the modernish styles, are just horrible to read. I mean HORRIBLE!
Nope. I have studied Latin and Greek, and what little I know of Hebrew makes it clear just how different it is!Have you studied Hebrew ?
Just another skeptic formerly from the Church of Christ. Yours isn't the only recent request I've had for a biographical sketch. Maybe I'll put something together sooner or later.btw. Have you considered updating your details. Who are you ? lol.
