Christianity 201 Guidelines

orthodox Christians only.

Discussion on matters of general mainstream evangelical Christian theology that do not fit within Theology 201. Have some spiritual gifts ceased today? Is the KJV the only viable translation for the church today? In what sense are the books of the bible inspired and what are those books? Church government? Modern day prophets and apostles?

This forum is primarily for Christians to discuss matters of Christian doctrine, and is not the area for debate between atheists (or those opposing orthodox Christianity) and Christians. Inquiring atheists (or sincere seekers/doubters/unorthodox) seeking only Christian participation and having demonstrated a manner that does not seek to undermine the orthodox Christian faith of others are also welcome, but must seek Moderator permission first. When defining “Christian” or "orthodox" for purposes of this section, we mean persons holding to the core essentials of the historic Christian faith such as the Trinity, the Creatorship of God, the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection of Christ, the atonement, the future bodily return of Christ, the future bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, and the final judgment. Persons not holding to these core doctrines are welcome to participate in the Comparative Religions section without restriction, in Theology 201 as regards to the nature of God and salvation with limited restrictions, and in Christology for issues surrounding the person of Christ and the Trinity. Atheists are welcome to discuss and debate these issues in the Apologetics 301 forum without such restrictions.

Additionally and rarely, there may be some topics or lines of discussion that within the Moderator's discretion fall so outside the bounds of mainstream orthodox doctrine (in general Christian circles or in the TheologyWeb community) or that deny certain core values that are the Christian convictions of forum leadership that may be more appropriately placed within Unorthodox Theology 201. NO personal offense should be taken by such discretionary decision for none is intended. While inerrancy is NOT considered a requirement for posting in this section, a general respect for the Bible text and a respect for the inerrantist position of others is requested.

The Tweb rules apply here like they do everywhere at Tweb, if you haven't read them, now would be a good time.

I'm not trying to assume anything, just noting a tendency in myself to feel proud about how long I've been a Christian which I need to squash when it comes up. I don't think I'm alone in that.
I don't see this as pride at all. I see it more about a journey, hard lessons learned, opportunities lost, victories won, and the opportunity to share these things.

I simply saw it as a conversation starter.

The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

Which is what OBP said here...

There are a lot of people who "become Christians" but are never discipled. Or were "scared into it" by hellfire sermons in the old days, or whatever, and just got "fire insurance". One of the most dynamic Christian men in my Church is a 72 year old guy who's been saved for just over 10 years. On the other hand, I have people in their 80's who seem to just be "coasting".

Why don't they mature? Does sanctification not proceed at the same rate for everyone?
If it weren't for the Resurrection of Jesus, we'd all be in DEEP TROUBLE!

Some of us seem to be dragged kicking and screaming into the Kingdom. I struggle not to but . . .
Micah 6:8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

                    I do.

I have an evangelist friend who loves to say "I can tell you 'bout the time and I can take you to the place".

I don't! Because who remembers exact dates from childhood?

His point was that he believed you didn't just "drift into" being a Christian, that there was a time or event where you made a conscious decision for Christ. I used to be pretty binary that way, but I realize for many people, it's a growing awareness, and I don't focus so much on a specific date/time, but the fact that you can confess Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

I have 3 brothers and 5 sisters - I can't remember their birthdates. I don't think "the date" is as important as the fact that you remember confessing Christ as Lord at some point in your life.

Or, you would have been if you hadn't become a Lutheran.

Sorry, but I was sure I had to opt out of that to save my soul - same as with other products of the Reformation (Matthew 28:20).
