      Ignatius tradition

I'm sure we all know the story Mark 9 where Jesus has a child on his lap and the rumor is that this was Ignatius. My question is where does this legend come from? Why is it heald as untrustworthy? And what reason is there to place the birth of ignatuis at 36CE?

      Re: Ignatius tradition

      As far as I know:

      1. Popular Christian tradition wanting to connect everything in Scripture and Church history to everything else.
      2. Not untrustworthy; just unlikely because of the average lifespan of the period and Ignatius' death in c. 117
      3. None, unless you want to count the legend itself as evidence. The problem with that is there are a lot of crap traditions in the ECFs, such as Jesus living to be over 50, and it's hard to tell which of the ones (of those that have no Scriptural support either way) we can take seriously.

I await the input of those who are more learned though.

The ECF were not infallible - I'm not aware of anyone who thinks the statement about Jesus' age is correct - but I've never seen a blanket assertion before that there are "lots of crap traditions" in them.

AD 36 would be a little late for him to be held by Jesus.

Yeah, I exaggerated. Sorry. I was feeling a bit pissy and depressed when I wrote that.

      You're right.
