      The Lamentations
      of Jeremias

      Chapter 1

And it came to pass, after Israel had been taken into captivity, and Jerusalem was made desolate, that Jeremias sat weeping, and lamented with this lamentation over Jerusalem, and said,

How lonely sits the city that was filled with people! She has become like a widow; magnified among the nations, a ruler among the provinces, she has become tribute.

2 In weeping she wept in the night, and her tears were upon her cheeks; and there is none of all her lovers to comfort her; all who were her friends have dealt deceitfully with her, they became her enemies.

3 Judea was taken into captivity because of her humiliation, and because of the abundance of her servitude; she abides now among the nations, but she has found no rest; all her pursuers have overtaken her in the midst of her oppressors.

4 The roads to Zion mourn, because there are none that come to the feast; all her gates are destroyed; her priests groan; her virgins are led away captive, and she is embittered in herself.

5 Her oppressors have become the head, and her enemies have flourished, because the Lord humbled her over the multitude of her impieties; her infants went away into captivity before the face of the oppressor.

      The Lamentations of Jeremias (LXX)

      Ch. 1

6 And all her beauty has departed from the daughter of Zion; her rulers have become like rams finding no pasture, and going away in weakness before the face of the pursuer.

7 Jerusalem remembered her days of humiliation and rejection; she thought upon all her desirable things, which were from the days of old, when her people fell into the hands of the oppressor, and there was no one to help her. When her enemies saw this they laughed at her displacement.
8 Jerusalem sinned a great sin; therefore, she has become turbulent, all who glorified her have humiliated her, for they saw her shame, and indeed, she herself groaned, and turned away.

9 Her uncleanness is before her * feet; she did not remember her last things, she was brought down greatly, there is no one to comfort her. Behold, O Lord, my humiliation, for the enemy has been magnified.

10 The oppressor has spread out his hand over all her desirable things; for she has seen the nations entering into her sanctuary, concerning whom Thou did command that they should not enter into Thy assembly.

      * Codex Aldina reads: “gatehouses”.

I was going to do some translating tonight, but just heard the sweetiest little voice say BABA (Greek for daddy), and I think I'm going to spend some time with my daughter. Bye.

      Lamenations of Jeremias

      Ch.1 (LXX)

11 All her people are groaning, seeking bread; they gave their desirable things for food, to restore their life. Behold, O Lord, and look, for she became as one dishonored.

12 All ye that pass along the way, turn, and see if there is sorrow like my sorrow, which has happened to me. The Lord who spoke to me has humbled me in the day of the anger of his rage.

13 He has sent fire from His lofty habitation, he has brought it down into my bones; He has spread a net for my feet, He has turned me back; he gave me as one put away and grieving all day long.

14 He was vigilant over my acts of impiety, they are twined about my hands, they came up upon my neck; my strength has become weak; because the Lord gave them in my hands, I shall not be able to stand.

15 The Lord has removed all my strong men from the midst of me; he has proclaimed against me a time to crush my choice men; the Lord has trodden the winepress for the virgin daughter of Judah, for over these things I weep.

16 My eye has brought down water, because he that should comfort me, that should restore my soul, is far from me; my sons were destroyed, because the enemy has prevailed.

17 Zion has spread out her hands, and there is no one to comfort her; the Lord has commanded concerning Jacob, his oppressors are all around him. Jerusalem became like a woman sitting apart in the midst of them.

18 The Lord is righteous, for I have greatly embittered His mouth. Hear now, all peoples, and behold my sorrow; my virgins and my young men have gone into captivity.
19 I called my lovers, but they deceived me; my priests and my elders failed in the city, for they sought food for themselves, that they should restore their lives, but instead they found none.

20 Behold, O Lord; for I am afflicted! My belly is troubled, and my heart is turned within me, because I have embittered, when I was embittering. Outside the sword has made me childless, even as death here at home.

21 Hear now, because I groan; there is no one who comforts me. All my enemies have heard of my calamities, and rejoice because you have done it. You have brought on the day, you have proclaimed the time, and they have become like me.

22 May all their wickedness come before Thy face, and glean them, as they have made a gleaning for all of my sins; for my groans are many, and my heart is grieved.

      Susanna

There lived a man in Babylon, called Joakim, 2 and he took a wife, whose name was Susanna, the daughter of Helkias, a very fair woman, and one who feared the Lord. 3 Her parents also were righteous, and taught their daughter according to the Law of Moses.

7 Now when the people left at noon, Susanna would go into her husband’s garden to walk. 8 And the two elders saw her going in every day, and walking; so that their lust was inflamed toward her. 9And they diverted their own mind, and turned away their eyes in order not to look unto heaven, nor to remember to make right judgments.

      Lamentations of Jeremias (LXX)

      Chapter 2

O how the Lord has darkened in His wrath the daughter of Zion! He has thrown down the glory of Israel from out of heaven unto earth, and has not remembered His footstool for His feet.

2 In the day of His wrath the Lord has overwhelmed her, and has not spared all the beautiful things of Jacob; He demolished in His rage the strongholds of the daughter of Judah; He fastened them to the ground; He has profaned her king and her rulers.

      Daniel (Sousana)

14 And when they went out, they parted from each other, and turning back they met again, and when they pressed each other for the reason, they confessed their lust. And then together they arranged for a time when they could find her alone. 15 Now it happened, as they were watching for an opportune day, she went in as usual with only two maids, and wished to bathe in the garden, for it was very hot. 16 And there was nobody there but the two elders that hid themselves, and watched her. 17 And she said to her maids, Now, bring me olive oil and soaps, and shut the garden doors, so that I may bathe. 18 And they did as she said, and shut the garden doors, and went out by the side doors to bring the things that she had commanded. And they did not see the elders, because they were hid. 19 Now when the maids had gone forth, the two elders rose up, and ran to her, 20 and said, Behold, the garden doors are shut, and no one can see us, and we are in lust with thee; therefore, give thy consent unto us, and be with us. 21 But if thou will not, we will bear witness against thee that a young man was with thee, and for this reason thou sent away thy maids from thee. 22 And Sousanna sighed, and said, I am in a narrow place. For if I do this, it is death for me; and if I refuse, I cannot escape your hands. 23 It is better for me to fall into your hands by not doing it, than commit sin before the Lord.

11 My eyes have failed with tears, my heart is troubled, and my glory is poured out onto the ground, over the destruction of the daughter of my people, while the infant and suckling fail in the squares of the city.

12 They said to their mothers, Where is the grain and wine? While they fainted like wounded men in the squares of the city, while their life is poured out into their mother’s bosom.

13 What shall I testify to thee, or what shall I compare to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? Who shall save * and comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Zion? For the cup of thy destruction was enlarged; who will heal thee?

14 Thy prophets have seen for thee vanities and folly, and they did not expose your iniquity, to turn thy captivity around; and they have seen for thee vain concerns, and empty visions.

15 All who pass along the way have clapped their hands at thee; they have hissed and shaken their head at the daughter of Jerusalem. Is this the city, of which they say, the Crown * of Joy of all the earth?

16 All your enemies have opened their mouth against thee; they have hissed and gnashed their teeth, and they said, We have swallowed her! Moreover, this is the day, which we expected; we have found it, we have seen it.

17 The Lord has done what He purposed; He has carried out His words, even that which He commanded from ancient days; He has demolished, and has not spared, and He has caused the enemy to rejoice over thee, He has exalted the horn of him who afflicted thee.

18 Their heart cried out to the Lord, O walls of Zion! Pour down tears like torrents day and night! Give thyself no rest! May * your eye not be silent,
      O daughter.

19 Arise, * give a cry of joy in the night at the beginning of thy watch! Pour out thy heart like water before the face of the Lord! Lift up thy hands to Him for the life of your infants, who faint with hunger at the start of all the exits.

20 Behold, O Lord, and consider for whom thou has gleaned grapes thus. Will women eat the fruit of their womb? * The cook has made a gleaning. * Will the infants nursing on breasts be murdered? Will thou kill the priest and prophet in the sanctuary of the Lord?

21 The child and old man fell asleep on the ground in the exits; my virgins and my young men went into captivity by the broadsword and by famine; in the day of Thy wrath Thou slaughtered them, Thou did not spared.

22 He has called my sojourners from all around as to a feast day, and there was no one on the day of the wrath of the Lord who was saved and left behind; as I prevailed and multiplied all mine enemies.

13 And they said to one another, “Let us go home, for it is meal time”.
      Daniel (Sousanna - LXX)

24 With that Sousanna cried out with a loud voice, and the two elders shouted against her. 25 And one of them ran and opened the garden doors. 26 So when the servants of the house heard the shouting in the garden, they rushed in at the side door, to see what had happened to her. 27 But when the elders had told their tale, the servants were greatly ashamed, for there never was anything like this ever said about Sousanna. 28 And it came to pass the next day, when the people were assembled at the house of her husband Joakim, the two elders came, full of their wicked plot to have Sousanna put to death. 29 They said before the people; Send for Sousanna, the daughter of Helkias, who is Joakim’s wife. So they sent for her. 30 And she came with her father and mother, her children, and all her kindred. 31 Now Susanna was a woman of great dignity, and beautiful to behold. 32 And these wicked men ordered her to uncover her face, for she was covered, so that they might feast upon her beauty. 33 Therefore, her family and friends and all who saw her wept.

      Lamentations (LXX)
      Chapter 3

I am the man who sees poverty through the rod of His wrath upon me. 2 He has taken me, and led me away into darkness, and not into light. 3 Only against me has He turned His hand the entire day. 4 He has made old my flesh and my skin, He has crushed my bones.

5 He has built against me, and encompassed my head, and has troubled me. 6 He has set me in dark places, like the dead of long ago. 7 He has built against me, and I shall not come forth; he has made my brass chain heavy.

8 Indeed, for though I shall cry out and shout for aid, He has shut out my prayer.
