  • Obama's approval rating

CNS News has an interesting article concerning Obama's average approval rating based on Gallup polling:

Source: 47.9%: Obama Had Lower Average Approval Rating Than Nixon or Bush

President Barack Obama had an average approval rating of 47.9 percent during his time in office, according to the Gallup poll.

That puts him behind Richard Nixon, who resigned, and George W. Bush, who saw his approval rating drop as low as 25 percent near the end of his term.

It puts him ahead of only Gerald Ford (47.2 percent), Jimmy Carter (45.5 percent) and Harry Truman (45.4 percent).

Gallup, in an analysis released Friday, published the average approval rating for all twelve presidents who have served since World War II.

John F. Kennedy ranks highest with an average approval rating of 70.1 percent. He is followed by Dwight Eisenhower (65.0 percent), George H.W. Bush (60.9 percent), Bill Clinton (55.1 percent), Lyndon Johnson (55.1 percent), Ronald Reagan (52.8 percent), George W. Bush (49.4 percent), Barack Obama (47.9 percent), Gerald Ford (47.2 percent), Jimmy Carter (45.5 percent) and Harry Truman (45.4 percent).

“After his first year,” the Gallup analysis said of Obama’s poll numbers, “he received sustained majority approval only once more during his first term in office. Fortunately for him, that came during his 16th quarter in office -- around the time he was re-elected in the fall of 2012. Shortly after his second term began, his support dipped back into the 40s and did not return to the majority level again until his final year in office.”

I think what makes Obama's numbers hard to evaluate sometimes is that many people disagree with him on his policies, but like him personally, and you can't really express disagreement with him without being accused of being racist.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

Do I see Ronald Reagan's name on that list with a better approval rating than the false messiah Obama?

Well I'm done with starlight as far as I'm concerned. The lack of sensible liberals on this board actually depresses me.

Um, you realize I recently posted exactly the same list of approval ratings, and pointed out that Reagan was in the middle (#7 of the 13 post-war presidents) approval-ratings wise?

Obama doesn't do all that great in the ratings because the country is deeply divided and the conservatives would disapprove of him because he's a dem, not because he does anything bad. That said, as a liberal/progressive/leftist I don't like Obama because he's a corrupt sell-out who hasn't pushed liberal and leftist policies remotely hard enough. He didn't seriously try to bring the hope and change he campaigned on. And because I actually have underlying principles (i.e. genuine support for liberal and leftist ideas) and don't just cheer for a team, I can be critical of the dems and Obama for their failures... unlike some conservatives here who just seem to cheer for Republicans for the sake of it.

And the left loathed Reagan to the depths of their souls. But back then the only media was the MSM, which being leftist also hated Reagan so all America heard about him was how he was horrible and was going to start WWIII any second now. In contrast the MSM fawned over Obama with some even calling him "godlike" and other such nonsense. Still, Reagan was more popular in his time than Obama was in spite of the press.

I'm surprised to see HW Bush ranked so highly when he easily lost to Clinton, and Reagan ranked so low even though both of his wins are among the most lopsided in American history.

Eh... it's so hard to tell what opinion polls are really saying because they're an inexact science, if they can even be considered a science at all.

Sorry good point, careless phrasing in the extreme on my part. His party (dems) lost the election to Eisenhower as a result of Truman's cabinet scandals. Eisenhower being the only Republican president in a 36 year period where it was otherwise under Dem control.

Approval ratings fluctuate throughout every Presidents term in office, the approval rating at the end of ones term, for instance Obama's 57%, is more of a reflection on his entire term and accomplishments.

Truman was not particularly popular during his presidency. No one could have lived up to the stature of FDR, elected four times during the depression and world war, and Truman was specifically chosen as someone relatively unimpressive. Nonetheless, over time, people began to change their minds about Truman after he left office.
