Due to life circumstances - of both you guys and myself - and various ups and downs, this has kind of gone and died. Would any of you object to me finishing this off with a bit of a short story? Just for closure and to tie up loose ends.
Thanks for everyone who played, whether they were here from the start, dropped out early or came in late - it was an enjoyable experience and I learned a lot about DMing in the process.*
*Such as, don't do it when you can't be sure you'll be around.

[No Objections from me, Chrs. It'd be good to provide some closure.

[Go for it.]
What the world thinks the most valuable exhibition of the Dao is to be found in books. But books are only a collection of words. Words have what is valuable in them - what is valuable in words is the ideas they convey. But those ideas are a sequence of something else - and what that something else is cannot be conveyed by words. When the world, because of the value which it attaches to words, commits them to books, that for which it so values them may not deserve to be valued - because that which it values is not what is really valuable. Thus it is that what we look at and can see is (only) the outward form and colour, and what we listen to and can hear is (only) names and sounds. Alas! that men of the world should think that form and colour, name and sound, should be sufficient to give them the real nature of the Dao. The form and colour, the name and sound, are certainly not sufficient to convey its real nature; and so it is that 'the wise do not speak and those who do speak are not wise.' How should the world know that real nature?

Come back next time to see how our heroes do!Crossbow bolts fly past Dru as she charges towards the barricade. Her grip firm on her hammer as she jumps the barricade, smashing it into the guard unfortunate enough to be there. “Nice of you t'join me” Albus says with a grin, digging his shortsword into the ribs of another. Dru raises her hammer again to prepare for another swing as the guard drops his crossbow and raises his hands – she stays her hammer.
The other soldiers see this and join him in disarming themselves and start to flee. “Thanks for yer cooperation” Albus says, shrugging.
“We need to move” Liliana growls, heading towards the palace without breaking her stride. The path to the palace is surprisingly clear but the door is closed shut with no sign of a lock.
“Ah can't do anythin' about that.” Albus says, inspecting the door.
Isaac sighs, “Well, we'll need to find ano-”
“DUCK” The party hears in their mind. Dru, Isaac and Lilliana hit the deck without any questions.
“Huh, what-” Albus says, turning round to see a ball of fire hurtling towards the door. “Oh cr-” He shouts, throwing himself to the ground.
The fireball explodes against the door and the party feel the heat as the explosion quickly dissipates. The door stands firm yet singed. “Hold on, looks like I could could break this now...” Isaac says, beginning to break down the door. Dru lends her hammer to help and between the thuds and splintering of wood, the party hears a piercing shriek from above. The two winged beasts swoop down. Albus and Lilliana take swipes at them as they come down – One goes flying limp into the wall while the other knocks Albus flying towards the door.
Albus hits the door and goes straight through – splinters fly everywhere as he lands on the stone cold floor. “I loosened it...” Dru mutters.
“Sure y'did.” Albus says, brushing himself off. He stands up to find four guards holding him at halberd-point. “Er.. lil' help in here?”
Dru's hammer – quickly followed by Dru – comes crashing through the door . In one fluid motion – before the soldiers have time to react – there's a loud “crack” as her hammer smashes through one of the soldier's ribs. Isaac comes through the hole in the door – holy symbol raised – sending a wave of holy light towards the soldiers who quickly crumple to the ground. He reaches down and heals Albus.
The party recognise the door at the end of the corridor as the entrance to the throne room and slowly head towards it after regrouping and taking a moment to catch their breaths. As they get closer they hear the rhythmic thudding of massive feet from behind the door. With a gigantic crash, a huge four-legged almost rhino-like demon crashes through the door. It's horn lowered, it charges towards the party – they ready their weapons and prepare themselves...
