Re: S. A. S. S.
How about "X is not all it's cracked up to be"? What can this possibly mean?
What it turned out to be is not what it is?"What I pray of you is, to keep your eye upon Him, for that is everything." (J.B. Stoney)

Re: S. A. S. S.
How about "silverware"? It's been a long time since what is called silverware actually had silver.
Or "set the table"? Set it where, I ask you?
And when was the last time you had a brunch that was between breakfast and lunch? All the ones I've been to have been in the afternoon. Call them "sunch." Or "lupper." Doesn't trip off the tongue so nicely as "brunch", though."What I pray of you is, to keep your eye upon Him, for that is everything." (J.B. Stoney)

S. A. S. S.
It's a meaningless slang word used by some dealers to make their 'ecstasy' sound cooler that the other guys'.In some cases it has been used to refer specifically to MDA,though there's no telling whether or not that is the case here. The term comes from the fact that sassafras can be used as precursor to production of MDxx type drugs.

Re: S. A. S. S.
I wonder also about "take a walk", take it where, I ask you?
The Germans are much more sensible, and say that they "make a walk.""What I pray of you is, to keep your eye upon Him, for that is everything." (J.B. Stoney)

Re: S. A. S. S.
Or "leaving your feet", how does this work, exactly? I generally take my feet with me--when I jump.

(credit to Peyton Manning, talking about his coach Tom Moore)
A Superbowl-style silly saying! What about "irregardless"?
Irreverent means not reverent. Irresponsible means not responsible. So irregardless means having some regard? As in not being regardless."What I pray of you is, to keep your eye upon Him, for that is everything." (J.B. Stoney)

Re: S. A. S. S.
Colts lost.

But how about "catching a cold"? what's up with that? as if you were shaking hands with every sniffling and sneezing person you met, trying to snag a cold.
Bob: "I'm catching a cold."
Bill: "I've decided not to chase them, myself!""What I pray of you is, to keep your eye upon Him, for that is everything." (J.B. Stoney)

Ooh, ooh, I've got a couple...
What about a "hot water heater"? Isn't it just a water heater?
And why do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?

And what about the "weekend"? Sunday as I seem to recall, being the first day of the week.

not quite on the same page as these sayings, but I've always wondered if it's a good or a bad thing if a vacuum really sucks

Re: S. A. S. S.
and whose wise-guy idea was it to use Bob and Bill as examples in dialogue? Why not Jon and Mark or Sue and Bertha? Or Paul and Sally....who the heck are bob and bill anyway

Re: S. A. S. S.
I did find out what's up with "have your cake and eat it too" (which doesn't sound so unreasonable). It used to be "eat your cake and have it", as in eat it and still have it, and somehow that got turned around.
Or turned downside up, so to speak."What I pray of you is, to keep your eye upon Him, for that is everything." (J.B. Stoney)

Re: S. A. S. S.
Here's one, why is it that you can answer "Did you take the dog for a walk?" with a yes or a no to mean you did or you didn't, but you can't answer "Did you not take the doggie for a walk?" like that?
If you answer yes, that's fairly ambiguous, a yes may well be taken to mean that's correct, I didn't do that. And a no means I didn't do that, either."What I pray of you is, to keep your eye upon Him, for that is everything." (J.B. Stoney)

There are a couple of sayings of exclamation that don't make much sense to me, like "I do declare!" and "Goodness gracious!"

Well, I might insist that it's really Bob who said this and it's Bill who said that. I might. But I won't.
