I think the women are going to rebel once they see how nasty men's bathrooms can get.

We've had this discussion before. Apparently women's bathrooms can get pretty nasty too.

In places with unisex bathrooms is there a problem with sexual assault? How does it compare with single sex bathrooms? I feel like these would be good questions to have answered to help resolve this issue. Apparently it makes some people uncomfortable, and I'm trying to see if that discomfort is warranted.

As far as I can tell with the help of google, there has been one incident in the entire world. Some male students at university residence took advantage of shower doors not being floor-to-ceiling to take video of girls in the showers. Of course, the number of times this sort of thing has happened in university residences with single sex bathrooms is probably rather high.

How does it compare with single sex bathrooms?
Again as far as I can tell with the help of google the vast vast majority of sexual assaults do not occur in bathrooms. So when talking about sexual assaults in bathrooms you're dealing with really small numbers.

Frankly if I were experiencing a sexual assault in a bathroom I would much rather it be unisex as that doubles the chances that someone might walk in and see/hear, and if the person who walks in is a male all the better for the possibility of them physically intervening to help. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a fairly large effect of unisex bathrooms reducing what tiny sexual assault currently occurs in bathrooms, because currently female-only bathrooms are an inherently vulnerable area where a male assaulter can walk in and potentially have his way with his victims without being challenged by another male, whereas unisex bathrooms remove that expectation on the part of the potential attacker.

I don't really see a necessary connection between extreme discomfort and sexual assault. In the military we had random mandatory urine tests where a Sgt. had to look at your junk while you're doing your biz. Man, I'll tell you, I had the worst stage fright I've ever experienced in my life. They tried everything, running water, trying to talk to me, trying not to talk to me, nothing. I was so full on water I was about to burst. They threatened me with a catheter and forced liquids if I didn't get this done, and I still couldn't go. The Sgt. turned his head for a split second, and that's all I needed. I almost got in trouble for that, but they let it go with a warning. Never had that sort of discomfort peeing around anyone else ever again. Strange. I can only imagine if the Sgt. was a woman. There's just no way. I never felt like I was being sexually assaulted. Never ever crossed my mind. I just was shy at that time in my life about peeing in front of others. I'm not an exhibitionist now, but as I've grown older, I've cared less.

The thing is, this will effect women's bathrooms more than men's seeing as male to female transgender people are vastly more common than female to male (I personally know something like 5 or 6 transgender male to females. I don't know one female to male). Women already have a mistrust of strange men. Assault or no. Allowing strange men who have a severe psychological/spiritual disorder into the same bathroom with them, and their daughters is going to make most women (and their significant others) extremely uncomfortable regardless of the statistical numbers of sexual assault by Edited by a Moderator. Actual, real XX chromosome women outnumber male to female Edited by a Moderator by a ridiculous number. Transgender people make up what, .3% of the population? Why are we so willing to give up the comfort of an extremely huge part of the population for an extreme minority? This all comes down to comfort, right? The comfort of the transgender person to go to the restroom of their choice. Why should the .3 percent of the population get preference over the vast majority of the rest of the population?

Again, it feels extremely strange to have to explain what seems to me to be common sense. Why is this so hard for people to deal with?

right. it isn't even about assault, although that is a concern, it is about privacy. That is the reason we have bathrooms with doors in the first place instead of just sticking toilets in the corner of a room. People want privacy when relieving themselves. It is already a compromise when you have to share a bathroom with others of your same gender, having to share the bathroom with the opposite gender is just too much.

Are Jed's moderating editions here meant to be serious or sarcastic? It feels a little overblown for sarcasm, and if it's serious I don't remember reading any profanity in Adrift's post

Adrift used a colloquial reference to transsexuals which is considered by some to be offensive.

Strange. It's not considered offensive by anyone that I know, and I certainly intended no insult. In fact, my transgender acquaintances use the term to refer to themselves and other trans (hopefully I can still use that word) people all the time. Oh well, it's your guy's website. Your rules.

I think it might be a regional thing. TWeb takes that into consideration with certain other terms if I'm remembering right.

If you actually had transgender acquaintances I doubt you would have such absurdly and completely wrong beliefs about what transgender people think about themselves. e.g. your delusional view that transgender people have a psychosis because they have false beliefs about the biological sex of their own body.
