Donald Trump state visit: MPs of all parties call for US President's trip to Britain to be cancelled.

They haven't decided anything... yet. But I think if there's any justice in the world they should wait until everything is arranged, and then just as Trump's flight touches down, ban him from entering the country, leaving him to struggle to rearrange his schedule and deal with the costs of his flight like he did to all those people who had paid for tickets to the US and were suddenly banned by Trump from entering the US while they were in the air. The idiot-in-chief needs someone to do unto him as he's been doing unto others so he can "figure out what's going on".

A major problem with your idea. Imu, the costs incurred by a visiting Head of State are covered by the host country, and the host country becomes responsible for the well being of the individual and their entourage. Imu, diplomatic protocol allows some compromise in this arrangement - especially when dealing with high maintenance Americans. So, Trump either visits the UK as a private citizen, or the visit has to be formally cancelled before he sets foot in Britain.

That aside: because of Brexit trade issues the UK can't afford to upset Trump...

So, imo, we just have a bunch of try-hards attempting some grand-standing...are local elections due in the UK anytime soon?

Do you also think they should do that to Obama for the same reason?

Hundreds of Cubans who sold their homes and belongings in pursuit of an American dream that now lies in tatters have been stranded in Central America and Mexico on Friday after Washington abruptly ended a lenient immigration policy.

Barack Obama on Thursday repealed a measure granting automatic residency to virtually every Cuban who arrived in the US, whether or not they had visas, ending a longstanding exception to US policy.

The end of the “wet foot, dry foot” policy, which allowed any Cuban who reached US soil to stay, but returned any picked up at sea, took effect immediately. Cuban officials had long sought the change, arguing it would discourage people-trafficking and dangerous journeys.

José Enrique Manreza, who sold his house and possessions in Havana to embark on a epic trip by plane, bus and foot through the rainforests of French Guiana, Colombia and Panama, estimated he had spent about $10,000 on the journey.

“Imagine how I feel, after I spent six days and six nights running through rivers and jungles in the humidity,” said Manreza, at a migrant shelter in the southern Mexican city of Tapachula, where he heard the news, along with 30 other Cubans.

Btw, anyone else think starlight is well beyond nutty to want to piss off the allegedly thin skinned president of the most powerful nation on earth to avenge the honor of a small number of foreigners? I can only imagine what this idiot nujob would actually be like as the leader of a country. New Zealand would be bathed in nuclear fire within a week of his becoming prime minister.

Wow, that's terrible of Obama if true. I'd not heard of that.

Justice must include justice for the powerless against the powerful if it is to be justice.

We stuck it to the Americans three decades ago by banning their warships from our waters. Nuclear fire hasn't happened yet.

While I'd probably try to place sanctions on the US were I prime minister, it seems unlikely that would bother the US all that much because we're a relatively small country.

Hardly surprising. You only pay attention to left wing media and there was no media frenzy surrounding it and calling it "poorly planned" day after day like they do with Trump.

Justice must include justice for the powerless against the powerful if it is to be justice.
There's nothing injust about banning outsiders from entering your country anymore than it is from banning people from entering your house. Even if I invite them, if I rescind the invitation they gotta go home. This is just part of typical insane progressive thought where treason to your friends and neighbours is considered virtue, as is loyalty to strangers and enemies.

I'm sure the Americans are extremely upset about not wasting fuel defending your ungrateful behinds. I suspect your tune would change quickly if America really did take a completely isolationist position and China decided to invade.

It would be hilarious watching Trump retaliate and turn NZ into a third world country with an economic blockade, followed by the people of NZ quickly mounting you on a meat hook, yes.

No, because Obama's Cuba policy differs from Trumps muslim ban. Obamas policy bans Cubans from entering the country illegally, without visas, it didn't ban everyone coming from Cuba, and it didn't ban people from traveling to and from Cuba. Cubans have long been given special immigration priviliges, allowing them to enter the country illegally and to then become citizens after 1 year. Obamas policy simply rolled those special priviliges back.
Hardly surprising you don't understand the difference, you only listen to right wing media, i.e. fake news.

                  LOL!

Jim, Jim, Jim - the ferver you use to defend the democrats no matter what, would be admirable if it were not so damn STOOOOOPID.

Derr.... guess what? When Trump blocked off those countries it was illegal to immigrate from them. Therefore they were only banning illegal immigration too.

Besides I thought your argument was that the EO was illegal because it targeted muslims and not everyone? Yet now you are defending only banning Cubans, while complaining that Trump banned everyone.

UK defends Trump state visit offer despite protest

The British government on Monday defended its decision to offer U.S. President Donald Trump a lavish state visit and an audience with the queen this year, defying protests outside parliament and dissent from lawmakers.

Prime Minister Theresa May's government wants to reaffirm the "special relationship" with the United States and secure a trade deal as Britain prepares to leave the European Union.

"In the light of America's absolutely pivotal role we believe it entirely right that we should use all the tools at our disposal to build common ground with President Trump," junior foreign minister Alan Duncan told parliament.

He described state visits as Britain's "most important diplomatic tool", saying Trump's trip would go ahead as planned.
                    ...
Prime Minister May has said she will not consider cancelling the visit. Managing the backlash adds to her diplomatic "to-do" list as she sets about reuniting a country divided over Brexit and negotiating a divorce with European trading partners.

The British government understands that Trump is a friend and ally unlike Obama who seemed to go out of his way to insult the British soon after becoming president by returning a bust of Winston Churchill which had sat in the Oval Office

And Trump's temporary restrictions weren't a "muslim [sic] ban" since Muslims are not banned from coming into the U.S. It only restricted travel from seven countries that were targeted by an anti-terrorism law, cited in an executive order, signed December 2015 by Obama.

It's not all or nothing, there is an alternative. Namely an 'Official Visit' as opposed to a 'State Visit' with all the pomp and pageantry that entails...usually including a banquet hosted by the queen.

As an aside, I was particularity amused by the conservative MP arguing FOR a State Visit along the lines of Britain's historically close ties with the US etc etc, etc and ending with: "no matter how grotesque Trump may be as a person."
