I think the whole "everybody deserves respect" trend^[1] a few years ago exacerbated things and being given participation trophies continued the movement.


1. No they don't. You earn respect. It is not something owed you just for existing. What you deserve is being treated courteously unless you do something to screw that up.

Everyone deserves the basic respect due to all people. The participation trophy business was more focused on making everyone feel equal in respect to accomplishments, that was (and is?) the problem with that hopefully fading trend.

Just because BuzzFeed churns out garbage sometimes (and I agree they do) it doesn't mean every single thing they report is garbage.
