Re: U2 ?
This song has been on my mind for a few days now. The Restorer (circa. 1978)
I think this poetic composer is one of the leading peeps in ACUK.

Re: U2 ?
One thing I've always liked about Like a Rolling Stone is how, though ostensibly a taunt, portions of it can be re-read as making an empowering statement about freedom from materiality and image:
"When you ain't got nothing, you ain't got nothing to lose.
You're invisible now, you've got no secrets to conceal."
Apparently even Dylan was struck by this paradox. This artistic resolution of conflicting meanings in a single item is the hallmark of great literary art, IMHO.

Re: U2 ?
That is deep! I have often sung this song, and even moulded the energy into the title track, on my first CD.
'Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
They’re drinkin’, thinkin’ that they got it made
Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts and things
But you’d better lift your diamond ring, you’d better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can’t refuse'
I used to sing this part and never really get it...in retrospect is it a chapter out of history? or just words?
Sincerely,
HH

Re: U2 ?
Neil,
Two other songs come to my mind, when I think about 'Like A Rolling Stone" :
Me & Bobby McGee by Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster (the Janis Joplin version) and the line, "Freedom's just another word, for nothing left too lose"
Where do you go to my lovely by Peter Sarstedt, the whole song.
Plus an old blues tune, but I cannot remember the line.
Edit add: lol
I was sitting here thinking and praying, and then it come back to me...."You can't lose what you ain't never had" (Muddly Waters)
Sincerely,

Re: U2 ?
They are in fact words to a song adapted from a prayer that was attributed to an old saint, but the link was never succesfully established. ( according to Wiccapedia )
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon:
where there is doubt, faith ;
where there is despair, hope
where there is darkness, light
where there is sadness, joy
O divine Master,grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen

Re: U2 ?
The lyrics do sound like a Christian song; never crossed my mind before (not that I had read the lyrics before today; and I used to be quite a fan).
I have climbed highest mountains
I have run through the fields
Only to be with you
Only to be with you
I have run
I have crawled
I have scaled these city walls
These city walls
Only to be with you
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
I have kissed honey lips
Felt the healing in her fingertips
It burned like a fire
This burning desire
I have spoke with the tongue of angels
I have held the hand of a devil
It was warm in the night
I was cold as a stone
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
I believe in the Kingdom Come
Then all the colors will bleed into one
Bleed into one
But yes I'm still running
You broke the bonds
And you loosed the chains
Carried the cross
Of my shame
Oh my shame
You know I believe it
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for

Re: U2 ?
The album this song comes from is one of my very favorites of all that I have. It's The Joshua Tree. Great album. (I just thought I ought to mention the album's name; just a a FYI for anyone who might not know, who is passing through.)
Also top-notch U2 albums are these that preceded it:
War
The Unforgettable Fire
Wide Awake In America (a live recording)
...and the part studio recordings and part live performances album that followed The Joshua Tree:
Rattle And Hum
A note: The song "40" on the album War is based on Psalm 40.

In my opinion, the single most telling piece of evidence that shows how poorly we're manifesting our call to care for animals is the recent creation of factory farms. Over the last century we have, to a large degree, reduced farm animals to commercialized commodities whose only value is found in how efficiently we can produce and slaughter them for profit. Consequently, more than 26 billion animals each year are forced to live in miserable, overcrowded warehouses, where there is absolutely nothing natural about their existence and where they are subjected to barbaric, painful, industrial procedures.
This is a far cry from what God meant when he told us to exercise "dominion." (Pastor Greg Boyd.)

Re: U2 ?
Mmm...one of the few bands who thrived in the early 80's and nearly disbanded in the early 90's, .....they certainly are survivors!
When Bono was discussing the meaning of "Even Better Than The Real Thing", which apparently triggered a fresh breath of inspiration which sparked the classic "One"...I got an eye into the pressure, these guys were feeling...
Though I am not an avid fan of this band ( I am still listening to Common One by Van Morrison) , "One" certainly was more than a brush. It thundered through the consciousness of fans."It was reflective of the times [the band] were living in, when people were no longer looking for the truth, [they] were all looking for instant gratification"

FYI, It is interesting to know that the Joshua tree is a kind of cactus that only blooms every forty years.

Re: U2 ?
A most interesting tree.
They can live up to as long as a 1000 years, and are pollinated by the Yucca Moth.
It is rumoured that the Mormon's first called them the Joshua trees.
We have a copy of the CD that we have not yet opened. I guess we will wait until we are reunited with our son... "Joshua"
Yuck.
