If the government does it obviously the money has to come from somewhere.

Assuming there is, it could probably be argued that it would be offset by the drop off in military spending in those places that we currently rely on for oil.
Which, in your opinion, has no other economic cost. All the military and support personnel that previously worked there can now start building solar panels in their back yard.

But even assuming everything you said is true, DiCaprio will also be taxed higher, and will also pay higher prices for just about everything. If that's the price that needs to be payed for a cleaner environment, and a healthier earth, then so be it. Perhaps had governments and industries been more willing to adjust to sustainable resources earlier, then we wouldn't be complaining today about higher prices. The little people always seem to pay for the price of the government's procrastination on these sorts of things.
Unless DiCaprio is taxed into a pauper he will still be a rich man living a life of luxury while the average person suffers disproportionately.

At any rate, none of this really has anything to do with DeCaprio legally using the resources at his disposal.
what does that even have to do with whether he's a hypocrite or not?

As far as I know, he has no investments in the world's major polluters like Chevron, Exxon, BP, etc. If he did, then I'd totally agree that he was being hypocritical.
So in your opinion someone who claims to oppose abortion but performs them himself isn't a hypocrite as long as he doesn't invest in Planned Parenthood and the like?

Doesn't seem right to me that he should be painted a hypocrite just for being rich, and doing rich people things, while still investing tons of his money and time into charitable causes that address these concerns.
It's not just oil companies who profit from oil. The state does (oil is one of the most heavily taxed goods, second only to vices like cigarettes) and the rest of us do too. DiCaprio certainly benefits from oil in his plane. And in truth the richer you are the more you can offset your footprint by buying technology out of the reach of the average person, so one would expect DiCaprio to polute less, not more.

And no, he shouldn't be painted a hypocrite for being rich, he should be painted a hypocrite for polluting and belching more CO2 into the atmosphere than any non-rich person ever could and then lecture the rest of us on climate change. He's the very definition of a hypocrite. If he wants to persuade people he's serious (rather than be a laughingstock like he is now) he should fly coach, drive a Tesla and run his mansion off solar power.

He could have used someone local to do his eyebrows instead. Flying someone in from 3500 miles for such a petty thing does seem ridiculous to me, not because of fossil fuels but just because of seer vanity.

I'm thinking she does more than his eyebrows.
Either that or she's a personal friend who gets to write off a trip to the Oscars because she did work.

There is something else at play here.
Actually YOU put Trump in the White House. He wouldn't have gotten 1% of the vote if it wasn't for the widespread spiritual and cultural devastation caused by progressive policies. There's no "this country" left with your immigration policies, your "allies" are worthless and even more suicidal than you are and democracy is a sick joke that I hope nobody ever thinks about repeating when the current order collapses. - Darth_Executor striking a conciliatory note in Civics 101

yeah I am thinking the same. sounds to me like an excuse to get to the Oscars and write it off as business.

Apparently she worked for other global warming opponents at the oscars, not DiCaprio in particular. These kinds of absurd excesses are commonplace among the rich and powerful though. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if one of them flew someone in on a private plane to do their eyebrows. Rich, needle, camel and all that.

It is, as seer points out, the hypocrisy of it. Sort of like when Barbara Streisand was lecturing people a dozen years or so ago to turn their AC thermostats up to 78 degrees when they’re home, and 85 degrees when they’re out and then it was revealed that she keeps the ACs in her various homes in the 50s or possibly lower even if she hasn't been there in months.

Or like even earlier back in the 1970s when Richard Nixon was telling Americans to forgo hanging Christmas lights in order to conserve energy and it turned out that he ordered staffers in the White House to turn on the AC so he could keep a fire going in the fireplace.

I'm always still in trouble again

While on Piers Morgan's now defunct CNN talk show Moore repeatedly adamantly denied belonging to the 1%
MORGAN: I need you to admit the bleeding obvious. I need you to sit here and say, I'm in the 1 percent, because it's important.

                          MOORE: Well, I can't. Because I'm not.

MORGAN: Because the validity of your argument -- you are, though.

MOORE: No, I'm not. I'm not.

MORGAN: You're not in if 1 percent?

MOORE: Of course I'm not. How can I be in the 1 percent?

                          MORGAN: Because you're worth millions.

A day or so later after pressure continued to mount Moore had to admit on his blog that he is indeed among the nation's wealthiest citizens, although without providing any details of just how rich he is, in a post called "Life Among the 1%"

Definitely a bit OTT. I prefer to deal with eyebrows by using a French braid. They keep the back of my neck nicely warm in winter.
