Re: i just reserved an iPad
I disagree that the iPad is ridiculous. Right now I am lying on my bed w/ my laptop propped against my bent knees. I have been noticing that using my laptop in this way is causing a ton of pain in my wrists. I'm beginning to become quite fearful of carpal tunnel syndrome and similar issues knocking me out of my profession. (IT) I'm quite hopeful that the tablet form factor will help relieve the stress on my wrists. Even if it doesn't, at least it will be a different form factor that will allow me to use my wrists in a different way for a few hours a day/week.
Also, I really like both my iPod touch and iPhone as browsing devices on the couch, but they are just really way too small to be very useful in many instances. I think the iPad, with its larger screen, "it just works" no fiddling philosophy, instant "boot up", ridiculously long battery life (it only has to get half its claimed 9 hours to more than double my netbook's life), thin/light size, and inexpensive price tag, really does make a lot of sense.
Will it sell as many as iPods or iPhones? Probably not, the use case is much more targeted. But for what it does, it does well and will make a lot of people, including me very happy.
I am not at all happy about the closed development environment, nor do I like that about the iPod/iPhone. But for what it delivers today, I get more functionality that works better at a lower cost then anything else available today. It could be even more with an open development platform (like the Mac), and that annoys me, but on balance, it's still going to give me far more value than my netbook. (which I love, but is a toy)Last edited by $cirisme; March 21st 2010 at 08:55 PM.

Re: i just reserved an iPad
If the iPad is made like the iPhone, it will be a winner simply because of the durability factor. I've dropped my iTouch onto the pavement several times with no problems. I haven't seen a netbook yet which would survive such a drop without damage.

Not so silly talking w/ a BT earplug and Skype.
Apple always punishes new adopters, though. G2 products are typically released the next quarter with better specs and features for the same argent.

Re: i just reserved an iPad
Punishes? The only example of that I can think of is when the original iPhone was released and they dropped the price. But I can't think of anytime where they released a new product and released an updated one a quarter later. Most of Apple's products (regrettably) are on a year-long cycle.
If you don't like the iPad as it is now, wait a year and it will probably be better as with any technology product. But I'm not going to wait a year just for what will probably be a few incremental improvements.

I hope you are right and I am wrong, but I have been associated with Apple in some way since 1986. Our motto was "You can identify the pioneers by the arrows in their backs".
I expect to see some combination of G4 communications, FLASH support, memory upgrade, a camera and/or a significant price decrease announced within the quarter. They will definitely wait a bit longer than with the first iPhone when it took them only 3 weeks to double the memory and drop the price by 33%.

Re: i just reserved an iPad
Flash support is never ever going to happen. Never. Even if it does, I consider that a downgrade. The first extension I always install in any browser is flash block.
4G? Doubtful. Maybe if they dump AT&T, and offer it as a new and even more expensive model. (like how the 3G is extra) But I'm not getting the 3G so I don't really care. A camera might be nice. But if that happens, it will be in the next year's model.
The only thing on your list I think is remotely possible in so short a time is more memory at a lower price. But that is just the rapid progression of technology. After a year, the price I paid for my 16gb iPod touch cold buy a 32gb one. But it seems silly to complain about high technology getting cheaper... that's what I want!
