Biblical Languages 301 Guidelines

This is where we come to delve into the biblical text. Theology is not our foremost thought, but we realize it is something that will be dealt with in nearly every conversation. Feel free to use the original languages to make your point (meaning Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic). This is an exegetical discussion area, so please limit topics to purely biblical ones.

This is not the section for debates between theists and atheists. While a theistic viewpoint is not required for discussion in this area, discussion does presuppose a respect for the integrity of the Biblical text (or the willingness to accept such a presupposition for discussion purposes) and a respect for the integrity of the faith of others and a lack of an agenda to undermine the faith of others.

    Romans 8:32

    ὅς γε τοῦ ἰδίου υἱοῦ οὐκ ἐφείσατο ἀλλὰ ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν πάντων παρέδωκεν αὐτόν, πῶς οὐχὶ καὶ σὺν αὐτῷ τὰ πάντα ἡμῖν χαρίσεται;

    Transliteration (Accordance):
    hos ge tou idiou huiou ouk epheisato alla hyper hēmōn pantōn paredōken auton, pōs ouchi kai syn autō̧ ta panta hēmin charisetai?

    Translation (NRSV):
    He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else?

    Analysis (Zerwick/BDAG):
    γε : particle emphasizing the foregoing word, ὅς γε he who.
    ἐφείσατο : aorist of φείδομαι (τινος) spare (one) (e.g. suffering).
    παρέδωκεν : aorist of παραδίδωμι hand over, give up.
    οὐχί = emphatic οὐ not.
    καί : also.
    χαρίσεται : future of χαρίζομαι give as a favor.

      τίς ἐγκαλέσει κατὰ ἐκλεκτῶν θεοῦ; θεὸς ὁ δικαιῶν·

      Transliteration (Accordance):
      tis egkalesei kata eklektōn theou? theos ho dikaiōn;

      Translation (NRSV):
      Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.

      Analysis (Zerwick/BDAG):
      ἐγκαλέσει : future of ἐγκαλέω bring charges against, accuse
      ἐκλεκτός : chosen.
      δικαιῶν : participle of δικαιόω justify.

        Romans 8:34

        Text: (NA27):
        τίς ὁ κατακρινῶν; Χριστὸς [Ἰησοῦς] ὁ ἀποθανών, μᾶλλον δὲ ἐγερθείς, ὃς καί ἐστιν ἐν δεξιᾷ τοῦ θεοῦ, ὃς καὶ ἐντυγχάνει ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν.

        Transliteration (Accordance):
        tis ho katakrinōn? Christos [Iēsous] ho apothanōn, mallon de egertheis, hos kai estin en dexia̧ tou theou, hos kai entygchanei hyper hēmōn.

        Translation (NRSV):
        Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us.

        Analysis (Zerwick/BDAG):
        κατακρινῶν : future participle of κατακρίνω condemn.
        ἀποθανών : aorist participle of ἀποθνῄσκω die.
        ἐγερθείς : aorist passive participle of ἐγείρω raise.
        δεξιός : right, opposite left ; ἡ δεξιά (sc. χείρ) right.
        ἐντυγχάνω : intercede.

          Romans 8:35

          τίς ἡμᾶς χωρίσει ἀπὸ τῆς ἀγάπης τοῦ Χριστοῦ; θλῖψις ἢ στενοχωρία ἢ διωγμὸς ἢ λιμὸς ἢ γυμνότης ἢ κίνδυνος ἢ μάχαιρα;

          Transliteration (Accordance):
          tis hēmas chōrisei apo tēs agapēs tou Christou? thlipsis ē stenochōria ē diōgmos ē limos ē gymnotēs ē kindynos ē machaira?

          Translation (NRSV):
          Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

          Analysis (Zerwick/BDAG):
          χωρίσει : future of χωρίζω separate.
          θλῖψις : distress ; suffering.
          στενοχωρία : constraint, anguish.
          διωγμός : (< διώκω pursue) persecution.
          λιμός, -οῦ, ὁ and ἡ : famine.
          γυμνότης , -ητος, ἡ : nakedness ; metonymy destitution.
          κίνδυνος : danger.
          μάχαιρα ; sword, here perhaps that of the executioner.

            Romans 8:36

            καθὼς γέγραπται ὅτι ἕνεκεν σοῦ θανατούμεθα ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν, ἐλογίσθημεν ὡς πρόβατα σφαγῆς.

            Transliteration (Accordance):
            kathōs gegraptai hoti heneken sou thanatoumetha holēn tēn hēmeran, elogisthēmen hōs probata sphagēs.

            Translation (NRSV):
            As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered.”

            Analysis (Zerwick/BDAG):
            γέγραπται : it stands written, perfect passive of γράφω write.
            ὅτι = "...
            ἕνεκεν : for the sake of.
            θανατούμεθα : passive of θανατόω put to death.
            ἡμέραν : accusative of duration : ἡμέρα day.
            ἐλογίσθημεν : aorist passive of λογίζομαι reckon, consider, think, passive be regarded as.
            πρόβατον : a sheep.
            σφαγή : (< σφάζω slaughter, especially animals for sacrifice) πρόβατα σφαγῆς sheep for slaughter.

              ἀλλ᾿ ἐν τούτοις πᾶσιν ὑπερνικῶμεν διὰ τοῦ ἀγαπήσαντος ἡμᾶς.

              all’ en toutois pasin hypernikōmen dia tou agapēsantos hēmas.

              Translation (NRSV):
              No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

              Analysis (Zerwick/BDAG):
              ἐν τούτοις πᾶσιν : in all these situations.
              ὑπερνικάω : triumph gloriously.
              ἀγαπήσαντος : aorist participle of ἀγαπάω love.

                38 πέπεισμαι γὰρ ὅτι οὔτε θάνατος οὔτε ζωὴ οὔτε ἄγγελοι οὔτε ἀρχαὶ οὔτε ἐνεστῶτα οὔτε μέλλοντα οὔτε δυνάμεις 39 οὔτε ὕψωμα οὔτε βάθος οὔτε τις κτίσις ἑτέρα δυνήσεται ἡμᾶς χωρίσαι ἀπὸ τῆς ἀγάπης τοῦ θεοῦ τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ τῷ κυρίῳ ἡμῶν.

                Translation (NRSV):
                38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

                Analysis (Zerwick/BDAG):
                πέπεισμαι : I am convinced, perfect passive of πείθω persuade.
                ἀρχή : ruler ; plural angelic powers.
                ἐνεστῶτα : things present, perfect (intransitive with present meaning) participle of ἐνίστημι in intransitive tenses, be present.
                μέλλοντα : things to come, participle of μέλλω.
                ὕψωμα : height.
                βάθος : depth.
                κτίσις : creation, creature.
                ἕτερος for ἄλλος.
                δυνήσεται : future of δύναμαι be able.
                χωρίσαι : aorist infinitive of χωρίζω separate.
