Christianity 201 Guidelines

orthodox Christians only.

Discussion on matters of general mainstream evangelical Christian theology that do not fit within Theology 201. Have some spiritual gifts ceased today? Is the KJV the only viable translation for the church today? In what sense are the books of the bible inspired and what are those books? Church government? Modern day prophets and apostles?

This forum is primarily for Christians to discuss matters of Christian doctrine, and is not the area for debate between atheists (or those opposing orthodox Christianity) and Christians. Inquiring atheists (or sincere seekers/doubters/unorthodox) seeking only Christian participation and having demonstrated a manner that does not seek to undermine the orthodox Christian faith of others are also welcome, but must seek Moderator permission first. When defining “Christian” or "orthodox" for purposes of this section, we mean persons holding to the core essentials of the historic Christian faith such as the Trinity, the Creatorship of God, the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection of Christ, the atonement, the future bodily return of Christ, the future bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, and the final judgment. Persons not holding to these core doctrines are welcome to participate in the Comparative Religions section without restriction, in Theology 201 as regards to the nature of God and salvation with limited restrictions, and in Christology for issues surrounding the person of Christ and the Trinity. Atheists are welcome to discuss and debate these issues in the Apologetics 301 forum without such restrictions.

Additionally and rarely, there may be some topics or lines of discussion that within the Moderator's discretion fall so outside the bounds of mainstream orthodox doctrine (in general Christian circles or in the TheologyWeb community) or that deny certain core values that are the Christian convictions of forum leadership that may be more appropriately placed within Unorthodox Theology 201. NO personal offense should be taken by such discretionary decision for none is intended. While inerrancy is NOT considered a requirement for posting in this section, a general respect for the Bible text and a respect for the inerrantist position of others is requested.

The Tweb rules apply here like they do everywhere at Tweb, if you haven't read them, now would be a good time.

Pope Francis: Christians and Muslims Worship the Same God?

The Bible lays out plenty of things that God really does care about: He cares about whether we obey his law. Muslims don't even believe in the law, as laid out in the Bible; they think it is corrupted, that we are supposed to cut off people's hands for stealing, etc. Muslims worship God but they do it very badly. Muslims are like the Samaritan (Northern) Israelite kingdom that set up two golden calves, and had the people worship those as God. Whether they were worshipping the same "God" or not was never the issue; the issue was that they were disobeying God's commandment against idols (in addition to disregarding the real temple, tolerating Baal, and doing other major sins).
    Exactly.

I think we'll have to disagree vis-a-vis the utility of the analogy. I see your point, but I don't think it's sufficient to say that they're worshipping a different God entirely, rather than worshipping God but beliving false things about Him.

I don't see a way for you to claim at all that after Jesus, Jews were still worshipping God. The moment they rejected Christ, they implicitly rejected the Second Person of the Trinity.

If they believed in all those things, then when you refer to George Washington, regarding that period, and they're referring to George Washington, regarding that period, then you're undoubtedly referring to the same person.
Is that the one who could hack off a tree with one swing of his axe and fought vampires? Or was that another American dude?
We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore on Christ's behalf: 'Be reconciled to God!!'

Christian God is father son and holy spirit. If you consider the color of jews and greeks to be white than the skin texture of heavenly father is white if you dont it is not.

While I agree with this to a degree, again, a skeptic too could look at the Christian past and point out that there were plenty of periods where Christians have not always been peaceful, honest, or loving, and they can point to passages in, say, the Old Testament as evidence that Christian behavior is modeled after God. They may be able to find Islamic nations that are peaceful (they exist), or look back into history where Islamic nations ruled in relative peace.

To be clear, I'm not saying they are right, but we have be on guard that we don't find ourselves using the same tired old skeptical arguments that are used against us. We have to be better than that.
The answer to that objection, is that the faults of Christians are contrary to their canonical texts, whereas jihad and fighting unbelievers and the deceitfulness of allah are all commanded in, or appear in, the Koran. Muslims *obey* allah when they go on jihad and kill unbelievers and apostates - whereas Christians are not carrying out a NT command when they do so. The objection is based on a false equivalence.
