One of my police instructors many years ago was one of the "Irish Whale" legends from Boston. He loved to say...

"Tis nothing more intimidatin than an officer in riot gear sittin on his horse, his shotgun across his lap, and his German Shepherd Police dog on the ground at his command".

If you've ever seen a Lipizzan stallion in action (even if was just in Disney's "Miracle of the White Stallions") you get a hint of how formidable a trained war horse was in combat. Those "acrobatic" moves are stylized battle maneuvers designed to clear space and take out any surrounding opponents. They were incredibly fierce.

Well, such is the design of the Kite Shield, but it was just as usefull in a melee as well. ^^

Besides, I simply adore the elegant shape of a kite shield. I can look full of elegance and class, and at the same time, have an extra edge to safeguard my legs. ^^

A think a case could be made, since theoretically, submarines were conceptualized during the 16th Century.

And I do recall that primitive submarines during the 19th Century were effectively used to drill holes to the large ships of the time. (Just imagine, your mighty Man-o-war, sunken or sabotaged by underwater saboteurs! )

It's a bit of a stretch, and it was a form of transport conceived during a time where gunpowder (by definition, post-gunpowder) was beginning to be embraced. But because it's martial applications did not require the use of gunpowder just yet, I suppose I will allow it. ^^

Considering that historians believe gunpowder was introduced into Europe during the early 13th Century I suppose that makes submarines post-gunpowder
