I'm not sure, actually. You Brits probably have slightly different copyright laws.

The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.
The Obernewtyn Chronicles series by Isobelle Carmody.
The First Chronicles of Thomas Covenant Unbeliever, The Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant Unbeliever and The Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant Unbeliever by Stephen Donaldson.
The Fall of Mahkinoc by Frank Wacholtz. The main character is a cyborg with a split personality, (one personality is male, the other female) who was framed for murder.
If you have the time, you can also download a game called The Way (split into six episodes) which, coincidentally, was made by his brother, Luke Wacholtz. Greatest independant RPG ever made, made using RPG Maker 2000, lolol. I would try to explain the plot, but it is so mind blowing that it cannot properly be conveyed in the English language.Crab Battle
noun
Words uttered to incite an all in brawl. Whoever says the words 'Crab Battle' will usually be spear tackled to the ground by anyone else present, and all parties will then engage in a fight to the death.
Reality untouchable, transparent, invisible to our fixed, restricted fields of vision. Existence taken for granted, absolute. Possessed, owned, controlled by the common sense-infected rational gaze, onward forever we walk among the ignorant. Never stray from the common lines.

Honor, Patronage, Kinship, & Purity: Unlocking New Testament Culture by David A. deSilva - Should be required reading for theist and non-theist who want to actually know what they're talking about.

"I hate Manwe's posts because I hate babies and America." --Augustine2004, August 6, 2011
Then Morgoth turned upon Húrin, and he said: 'Fool, little among Men, and they are the least of all that speak! Have you seen the Valar, or measured the power of Manwë and Varda?
Do you know the reach of their thought? Or do you think, perhaps, that their thought is upon you, and that they may shield you from afar?'
'I know not,' said Húrin. 'Yet so it might be, if they willed. For the Elder King shall not be dethroned while Arda endures.'
The Words of Húrin and Morgoth, "The Children of Húrin" by J.R.R. Tolkien

Re: Book recommendation
I might as well go ahead and recommend New Testament and the People of God by N.T. Wright here as Part II in that volume involves a great mix of philosophy as he discusses the structure of worldviews. Also, you might find God and the Philosophers edited by Thomas V. Morris to be interesting as it has twenty essays from twenty philosophers (including the likes of Peter van Inwagen, William J. Wainwright, C. Stephen Layman, Marilyn McCord Adams, Brian Leftow, George I. Mavrodes and Eleonore Stump) giving brief reasons for why they believe.
The entire Christian Origins and the Question of God series by N.T. Wright, which is currently three books: New Testament and the People of God, Jesus and the Victory of God and Resurrection of the Son of God. Also, his Surprised by Hope is a good popular work. As Manwe said earlier, Honor, Patronage, Kinship and Purity by David deSilva is also a good one. Anything by the Context Group (people such as Bruce Malina, Richard Rohrbaugh, John Pilch, Jerome Neyrey and others you can find via Google) is good. Admittedly, those besides the Wright books don't fit your parenthetical, but they are important nonetheless.Anything religiony (More of the arguments for/against than religion)
I imagine you've read Tolkien's five most popular works already, but I recommend re-reading them at least once a year until you expire. I would also recommend Children of Hurin and the following:Fiction: Fantasy is my favourite.
The Book of Lost Tales Parts 1 and 2
Unfinished Tales
The Tolkien Reader (which includes his "On Fairy-Stories" essay
Well, if you're more interested in Tolkien's background, read Humphrey Carpenter's J.R.R. Tolkien: A Biography and The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien compiled and edited by Christopher Tolkien and Humphrey Carpenter.Erm... Or anything else you think I might like
"I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened."
"So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you were also meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought."

"Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire."
-The Talmud, quoted in Schindler's List
"Many folk like to know beforehand what is to be set on the table; but those who have labored to prepare the feast like to keep their secret; for wonder makes the words of praise louder."

Re: Book recommendation
I got into philosophy by working in a library and getting bored. Fortunately for me, the desk was at the beginning of the stacks, which in modern categorization puts philosophy books at the beginning. I sat next to them, and the rest is history. I plan to continue teaching philosophy, though I wouldn't mind writing the occasional piece.
