"I hate Manwe's posts because I hate babies and America." --Augustine2004, August 6, 2011
Then Morgoth turned upon Húrin, and he said: 'Fool, little among Men, and they are the least of all that speak! Have you seen the Valar, or measured the power of Manwë and Varda?
Do you know the reach of their thought? Or do you think, perhaps, that their thought is upon you, and that they may shield you from afar?'
'I know not,' said Húrin. 'Yet so it might be, if they willed. For the Elder King shall not be dethroned while Arda endures.'
The Words of Húrin and Morgoth, "The Children of Húrin" by J.R.R. Tolkien

Fantasy - His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman
I don't read much fantasy any more these days, but Pullman's trilogy is solid. I go back to it once a year or two for a re-read.
Philosophy
Darwinian Natural Right - Larry Arnhart
If you're into ethics. Just finished reading it, and it's quite good.
I'll second Stevo's recommendation for Warranted Christian Belief. It's very readable, but still incisive.
Thomas Morris is a good author, as is Thomas Flint. William Hasker is also worth looking into.
As for historical figures, Nietzsche and Hume are always worthwhile (though some may argue the former).

Re: Book recommendation
Do you mean that the mechanics or technique of the trilogy are problematic, or do you mean that the philosophy it espouses is problematic?

Re: Book recommendation
The mechanics are okay, but not sufficient to counter the philosophy espoused. I had to will myself through the last book.
On the other hand, I highly disagree with the philosophy behind Ursula K. LeGuin's The Left Hand of Darkness, but the story is well enough written that I enjoyed it anyway.
I similarly enjoyed C. J. Cherryh's Cloud's Rider even though I disagreed with its grotesque parody of the consequences of unfettered capitalism.

Re: Book recommendation
Ah. Well, as there is no indication that the individual for whom the recommendation was made shares your distaste for a humanist philosophy, I stand by my earlier post.
For my part, I think the series is one of the better written I've had the opportunity to read.
