Looking for God...

“Search for the Lord and for his strength; continually seek him. Remember the wonders he has performed, his miracles, and the rulings he has given, you children of his servant Abraham, you descendants of Jacob, his chosen ones.” (Psalm 105:4–6, NLT, emphasis mine) “Oh, that we might know the Lord! Let us press on to know him. He will respond to us as surely as the arrival of dawn or the coming of rains in early spring.” (Hosea 6:3, NLT)
I never get tired of looking for God. I believe all the reasons we look for God can be placed in two categories. We can look for God for what He can do for us and we can look for God so we can know Him more intimately. Because God’s ultimate goal for our lives is that we’ll come to depend totally on Him there are times when we’ll be doing both at the same time. I don’t know about you but there are times when I struggle with the idea of depending totally on God. Does depending on God mean God does it all? For example since I am a diabetic does that mean in my quest to lower the sugar levels in my blood I can eat or drink anything I want let God to do all the work? My own personal take on depending totally on God is synergistic, meaning we can do more together than we can do individually. There is however a great big hole in that idea because the bottom line is God as Creator and Sustainer doesn’t need my help at all. So out of His love for me He lets me help.
I see God’s ultimate goal for our life here on earth as twofold first comes our dependency on Him and then comes His desire that we have life and have it abundantly. The independent/depend factor goes something like this, we do all we can to have life and have it abundantly and after all we can do whatever left undone God steps in and does the rest. Psalm 37 sheds Light on what I am trying to say. “Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.” (Psalm 37:3–4, NLT) There is however, one BIG IF attached to verse 4 if the desires of your heart are the desires of your own heart rather than the desires of God’s heart the abundant life you’re seeking and God is wanting to give you will probably never happen.
Jesus prayed, “Not my will, Father but Yours.” One of the best gifts we can give God is to surrender the desires of our hearts to Him so that His desires becomes our desire. Trust in the LORD, do all you can and when you’ve done all you can depend on Him and He will give you the abundant life you both want for yourself.
From the voice of experience one last thing to think about : eating a bowl of ice cream and a couple of cookies before going to bed, then asking God to help lower your sugar level doesn’t work! Maybe you’re not a diabetic but I don’t suppose you’ve done anything similar have you?
“So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.”**
