  • What was Ryan trying to achieve with Ryancare/Trumpcare?

The ongoing disastrous failure that is the Republican "healthcare" bill is playing out, but it makes you wonder, what did Ryan actually expect to achieve with it? Obviously Trump himself has no clue when it comes to policy ("Nobody knew healthcare could be so complicated") But what was Ryan playing at by trying to push a plan that is hated across the board and which reveals that the Republicans to be bumbling fools on the topic of healthcare?

    Options include:
    - Ryan is just not smart. Somebody gave him this bill and he naively thought people wouldn't barf at it.
    - Ryan floated this bill knowing it was a loser, for some sort of political motive (what?)
    - Trump flatly demanded that Ryan produce an Obamacare replacement, not realizing that the Republicans didn't have anything, and Ryan bowed to that pressure.
    - Ryan's just desperate to keep his speaker-ship and to try to keep the Republican party from fracturing due to Trump, the tea-party, and 'mainstream' Republicans pulling in 3 different directions.
"I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump
"Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism" - George Orwell
"[Capitalism] as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of evils. I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy" - Albert Einstein

Just like Trump's budget, they don't actually expect to get all this to work. This is the starting point for negotiations across a broad political spectrum. It could be months, if not a year or more, before we see anything actually concrete.

They have to get something started. There is intense pressure on them from Republicans across the country. They've been trying feverishly to get rid of Obamacare ever since it was passed. The alternative is a flat repeal of Obamacare, which scares too many establishment Republicans. For one thing, dumping people with pre-existing conditions on the sidewalk would not go over well in most parts of the country. Of course, there are enough Tea Party types who insist on a flat repeal to make any health care bill a real problem.

I think you left off the most obvious answer:
        - Ryan and the rest of the oligarchs (Democrats and Republicans) are in this to enrich themselves and their friends so this whole thing is going to be as complicated and drawn out as possible so that billions more can be nominally given to the poor when in reality it is being skimmed by politicians, business men, and pirates.

We need a new way to handle politicians.

I'd suggest the following list of questions be given to each politician:
1: How many billions would we have to deposit into your bank account to get you to actually work for the people?
2: How many under aged prostitutes would you need to have per week to actually work for the people?
3: How much blow, acid, 'shrooms, or smack would you need on a weekly basis to actually work for the people?

Maybe if we could fulfill all of their carnal needs up front they would no longer have the need to sell us out via backdoor shenanigans and so forth.
Maybe after an entire month of bedding hookers on a mountain of cash and blow they'd come out of their selfishness enough to actually do the right thing.
I say it is worth a shot.
Actually YOU put Trump in the White House. He wouldn't have gotten 1% of the vote if it wasn't for the widespread spiritual and cultural devastation caused by progressive policies. There's no "this country" left with your immigration policies, your "allies" are worthless and even more suicidal than you are and democracy is a sick joke that I hope nobody ever thinks about repeating when the current order collapses. - Darth_Executor striking a conciliatory note in Civics 101

Republicans have a philosophy, a free, and unregulated market, and screw the less fortunate, and even the obvious stupidity of their policy perspectives can't stop them from adhering to, and defending them. So, there are really only two answers to the question, either, as a party, they actually are stupid, never learn, or they are corrupt. Frankly, I think there is a whole lot of both in that party's leadership.

Huh, thats exactly what they want you to think. They have no intention of fixing it, their intention is to repeal it all, which is what they would do now if they thought they could get away with it. Their wealthy benefactors don't want to pay taxes, so back to free market healthcare we go, 24 million people losing theirs, the out of pocket expense for the less fortunate will put insurance beyond their ability to afford. Believe me, they don't want to fix it, they never did want to fix it, republicans never cared about healthcare to begin with. Ya see, Republicans don't believe in government, regardless of the consequences, they have their principles to uphold. Egad!

I note Paul Ryan said yesterday that he'd been dreaming of big cuts to government programs since college, which is interesting given his personal background that he received social security payments during that time because his father had died. Seems like he might have experienced a sort of self-hatred which he projected onto the government support he was receiving, which has manifested itself as a zeal to destroy that support for others. I suspect a psychiatrist would have a field day.

Because Medicaid and Social Security are the same program...

I suspect Ryan was trying to trick Donald Trump into attaching his name to Obamacare, so that when it inevitably fails, as it was designed to do, it would be Trump who takes the blame instead of Obama.

It's not what they want us to think, it's what's going to happen. The various wings of the republican party need to reconcile their versions of the bill, the senate will have its say. In order to pass, it will be a different document than what they propose. This is a well worn negotiating tactic.

yeah I don't think the government will cut social security. Since people pay into it directly, it would be pretty hard for the government to claim it is saving any money by getting rid of it and they would end up cutting their own throats if they tried. Not even republicans want to lose their social security.
