Australia ousts Rudd, replaced by first female PM
Australia's Labor party has ousted Kevin Rudd, replacing him with Australia's first female Prime Minister, Julia Gillard.
Rudd stepped down to avoid a Caucus vote that most commentators predicted he would lose.

It's not just the first female PM, it's also the first atheist prime minister.
I'm hoping she loses the next election, which is less than a month away.

Him: Why are you being quiet?
Me: Just sitting off, being quiet.
Him: Are you upset?
Me: No. Just trying to have some quiet time.
Him: I hate it when you sulk for no reason.
Me: I'm not, I'm just trying to enjoy a quiet ten minutes or so. Piss off won't you?

Wait wait....
Your perception of events during moontime is that we are the ones talking too much?
I can't imagine a guy has ever said this:
"Why are you being quiet?"
All the talking is going on his head, and it probably looks something like this [I'm pretending you're dating Darth for min]:
"Wow, she's being really quiet. I bet she's mad at me for something. Should I ask her? Nah, I'm going to go read Naruto instead."

Re: Australia ousts Rudd, replaced by first female PM
Oh honey, I actually have vicious depression and go very quiet roundabouts "moontime" (lol). I try to schedule social contact outside of that week because...
That's all I ever get, period. (Pardon, or revel in, the pun. Your choice.)I can't imagine a guy has ever said this:
"Why are you being quiet?"
I love my downtime. Reading a book, watching a bizarro foreign/indie movie, watching the football... I'm practically surgically attatched to my iPod, also.
Now, usually when a bloke assumes I'm in a mood simply because I think silence should only be broken with something worthwhile and not boring (examples: "I just bought some new coins on ebay", "the store guy at work is useless, and now I'm slightly behind on building the conservatory", "my sexist friend told a racist joke, do you want to hear it?"), I just carry on ignoring him (or her, my sister has some doozies, she's Marxist), or say "mmmhmmm that's nice, yeah, just reading at the moment, kay?".
However. When I'm depressed, I have a tendency to become a horribly sarcastic, perhaps verbally aggressive, individual; at what I perceive to be pointless social interaction.
This week I punched the electric meter three times because it had the temerity to have run out of money, meaning that I would have to interact with the man at the shop when I went to top it up. I had to get my sister round just to go there with the money. The man at the shop likes to ask me out on dates, and wouldn't you know it, a year of being told "no" hasn't quashed his enthusiasm and sunny optimism. Ack.
Ah ha! Well actually *sassy headshake, wagging finger (why not?)* Darth understands my erratic communication patterns, because I explained them with my words. He's a good enough mate to deserve an explanation, lol. Basically I never go quiet because I'm upset, I'm quiet by default unless the conversation promises to be sparkling. Conversations about "why are you being quiet?" are typically not particularly valuable or entertaining, especially when the energy required for politeness in the face of idiocy is hugely depleted (as is the case at "moontime").All the talking is going on his head, and it probably looks something like this [I'm pretending you're dating Darth for min]:
"Wow, she's being really quiet. I bet she's mad at me for something. Should I ask her? Nah, I'm going to go read Naruto instead."
Capisce?

Re: Australia ousts Rudd, replaced by first female PM
Hmmm upon reading my own words above, sounds like I'm horrible. Sometimes I am, perhaps it's having to interact positively with a four year old for most of the day with not much relief... I'm all "chattered out" by 8pm. I give her the benefit of her age, so I don't judge her conversation by any other standard than "stop being RUDE!".
Basically I'm very personable when I'm feeling able to talk, and I enjoy a good conversation. I'll probably be happier when I can handle a conversation that has been "sprung upon" me when I'm in my own little solitary world just going about my business.

"Years ago, I mean decades ago, I read a quote about politicians performing quid pro quo favors for campaign cash, and whether or not we could prove it. The guy who was quoted opined that it was difficult to determine. He noted that in many cases, the payoff might not take the form of votes on legislative action -- those might be detectable, and so are avoided -- but could take subtler forms, like the question that is never asked at a hearing.
The media's doing a terrific job of not asking questions it doesn't want to know the answer to. It doesn't ask these questions in bulk, and the great volume of questions it doesn't ask makes it cheap to not ask questions.
And it passes these savings on to you, the customer." Ace

If we're lucky, then Julie Gillard could be out of office in just a week!
(The election is on the 21st).
