  • When Do Millennials Think They Become Adults?

I can't wrap my head around this, I was out of the house by 17, a Marine by 18 and a Tank Commander by 19. I mean who wants to live with their parents until they are 30?

According to new research by CBS’ TV ratings guru David Poltrack and Nielsen Catalina Solutions, the youngest millennials should be graduating college this year — but that doesn’t mean they all consider themselves adults.

The median age of millennials is 30, Poltrack says — meaning that half are older and half are younger. And 30 happens to be the age at which millennials tend to self-identify as adults, Poltrack said. For these purposes, an “adult” is defined as “someone who has moved out of their parents’ home, has a job, and pays their own bills.”

...Why are millennials taking so long to grow up and move out? Some of it is their fault, some of it is their parents’ fault, and much of it is everyone’s fault.

For starters, the December 2007-June 2009 recession made finding employment harder — especially for recent college grads, many of whom happened to saddled with a ton student loan debt. High housing costs, meanwhile, reduced any stigma connected to living at home.

More controversial is the whole idea that their baby boomer parents have really coddled them,” Poltrack told TheWrap. “They’ve made it too good for them. Why would you leave?”

The military makes it easy to move out (and pays for it). For most normal jobs rent is just an additional expense. Added to the glut of jobs and maleducation of the average millenial and it's no surprise many can't make ends meet.

I moved out when I was 19. But I was already going to school and had a job (since 18). I just moved to another city to continue my schooling elsewhere. My brother joined the air force when he was 18.

I have no problem with kids living at home till they finish college and then move out. College is so dang expensive nowadays, there is nothing wrong with saving some money by living at home. I would expect them to help pay for college though by working a part time job.

I'm not even 30, and I've seriously considered the possibility of having my mother move in with me....

By 21 years of age I'd already moved out of my parent's house and into an apartment with an older woman.
Actually YOU put Trump in the White House. He wouldn't have gotten 1% of the vote if it wasn't for the widespread spiritual and cultural devastation caused by progressive policies. There's no "this country" left with your immigration policies, your "allies" are worthless and even more suicidal than you are and democracy is a sick joke that I hope nobody ever thinks about repeating when the current order collapses. - Darth_Executor striking a conciliatory note in Civics 101

That's different. Unless you mean you want her to move in with you, at her house.

The term for that (grave robber) sounds way cooler than the actual practice.

It's better to go for a model younger than you so that by the time she gets really old you're already dead.

Yeah, I've been considering the possibility of her (and, by extension, my little brother with Down Syndrome) moving in with me.

I am a millenial. I think its more a maturity thing but age is still a factor. I am a young adult. Going to pay a down payment or really the whole payment on a car tommorow.

It's a bit ambiguous who's providing this definition of 'adult'.

But obviously the age at which someone can afford a house is a function of the housing market - what is the median house price relative to median incomes? Likewise the age at which someone gets a job is a function of the job market - are jobs easily available or is unemployment high?

Culture also has a role to play. It's the culture in my country that students "go flatting" which means that at the age of ~18 when people start attending university that they move out of their parents' house and rent a house together with 3-5 other students while they attend university. Whereas in the nearby country of Australia the culture is that the children generally stay living in their parents home until they have saved enough money to buy a house of their own which generally happens around the age of 30.

I was out of the house by 17, a Marine by 18 and a Tank Commander by 19.
Er, sure, but I would consider you to be a kid at that age. I don't really agree with the OP definition of 'adult'. And joining the military made having a job and moving out of your parents' home happen simultaneously for you. I don't really approve of kids that age being allowed to join the military. Taking an immoral career in the military is a serious moral decision that kids that age don't really have the capacity to fully understand, and it seems like child abuse to me that they are allowed to be recruited and trained to kill.

who said anything about "buying a house?" Starlight. You can move out of your parent's basement without buying a house. I moved out when I was 19. I didn't buy a house until I was 27. I lived in apartments, most of the time with room mates.

Nice to see that you consider those who protect you and keep you from being executed as 'immoral'. Of course, what is amusing is your basic ignorance of how the military operates in general. I've been in for 13 years and have never been trained to kill anyone. You are aware that there's more jobs in the military beyond infantry, right? Keep wallowing in your hatred and ignorance of anyone not worshiping at your feet.
