Re: Life Without Wally World
I generally avoid walmart and now it's really easy since there's not one really anywhere near me here. Until about two years ago I had never even been in one on principle. But on the road on mission trips I had to make emergency stops there for different things.

My most recent faith struggle is not one of intellect. I don't really do that anymore. Sooner or later you just figure out there are some guys who don't believe in God and they can prove He doesn't exist, and some other guys who can prove He does exist, and the argument stopped being about God a long time ago and now it's about who is smarter, and honestly, I don't care. ~ Don Miller Blue Like Jazz

Wally World is too big. The selection is either overwhelming or nonexistent. The service stinks. The cashier's are usually under-trained so that anything unusual ends up taking 20 minutes. The prices aren't that great anymore (DG consistently matches or beats them. On dog food, Tractor Supply beats them hands down.) They never have large bags or paid stickers so you end up having to show your receipt on the way out anything you buy a large item. You better know what exactly the thing you want is called if you're trying to buy anything from the Garden Center because the numbers never match up and the clerks have no idea what you are talking about.
If you request help it takes 15 - 30 minutes before you get it. Heavy items are on high shelves which means the 90lb soaking wet little girl that shows up has to go get a guy, taking another 15 minutes. Any really good people leave within a month which maintains their crappy service nicely.
They got rid of lay-away which was the only useful service they had left. They start Christmas in September which mucks up the garden center just as you're changing seasons.
To be fair, they do do something I like - they so grossly overbuy seasonal stuff that there's no way they will sell it all which results in some ridiculously good sales on otherwise overpriced stuff.
Any other questions?

Maybe it's a local thing. My Wal-Mart doesn't resemble that much at all.
Here I am!

Plus they are lousy to their employees and don't stock anything manufactured in the US. I remember a great story a few years ago about how Torro refused to do business with walmart because they were being pressured to move manufacturing over sees to meet Walmarts buying prices. I'll go out of my way to by a torro product now.

I do most of my shopping online, except for clothes and groceries, and things I need immediately. I don't like walmarts grocery selection or prices so I do most of my grocery shopping at Kroger. But for household items and things like that I usually go to walmart or meijer (and only there because meijer is closer, it sucks in all categories) - clothes I usually get dress clothes at JC Penny, and casual stuff at walmart, or whatever store I happen to be near.

I love Amazon and Newegg.
especially for Christmas shopping. Having everything sent to me directly and already in boxes is great.
