I have something that might be considered a fundy atheist legend. One guy told me that only "fundamentalist Christians" actually believe the Bible to be historical.

Depends on what he means by "historical". It's a collection of historical documents written about people and places known to have existed with some actions described held to have actually happened. It's not held as 100% accurate as defined by modern standards by neither believers (except for the fundiest of fundies) or unbelievers. I don't understand the "all or nothing" mindset people have about the Bible.

Because they most likely were either/or, black and white fundies earlier in their lives and they took that attitude with them when they became atheist.
