"I hate Manwe's posts because I hate babies and America." --Augustine2004, August 6, 2011
Then Morgoth turned upon Húrin, and he said: 'Fool, little among Men, and they are the least of all that speak! Have you seen the Valar, or measured the power of Manwë and Varda?
Do you know the reach of their thought? Or do you think, perhaps, that their thought is upon you, and that they may shield you from afar?'
'I know not,' said Húrin. 'Yet so it might be, if they willed. For the Elder King shall not be dethroned while Arda endures.'

Ahem.... The Lord of The Rings.
But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.

The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favorite novels. the unabridged version. A story of revenge, when Alexandre Dumas wrote it, it was originally published in a French newspaper as an 18 part series. I started reading it b/c i couldn't let my husband read a thousand page novel without my reading it too less it would be the wall between us, he figuring himself greater than I. but seriously, it was compelling.
the brothers karamazov has to be one of my favorite novels as well. (also published as a serial i believe) .i love the philosophical dialogue, the moral struggles and the debates.

Terry Pratchett wins for best dialog, and for best use of footnotes.
Going Postal is one of my favorites.

Re: What are your favorites?
I'll give a few examples:
Jesus as shown in the gospels.1) Characterization
The Sermon on the Mount, the Pastorals, etc.2) Prose
Ecclesiastes, Jesus' smackdown of the Pharisees, etc.3) Dialog
"Eve! No! Don't listen to that snake! No! Put that fruit down NOW!" (Eve raises fruit to mouth, readers hold their collective breath. Eve chomps down.) "NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!4) Suspense
"
Self-explanatory.5) Themes
God vs Satan, believers vs the flesh.6) Protagonist and antagonist (might overlap with #1)
"Whoa! God just sent Jesus to Earth to save us from our sins! Who saw THAT coming?"7) Plot twists
Self-explanatory.8) Ending
Self-explanatory.9) Redemptions, fall from grace
Once again, self-explanatory.10) Plot

Re: What are your favorites?
"Years ago, I mean decades ago, I read a quote about politicians performing quid pro quo favors for campaign cash, and whether or not we could prove it. The guy who was quoted opined that it was difficult to determine. He noted that in many cases, the payoff might not take the form of votes on legislative action -- those might be detectable, and so are avoided -- but could take subtler forms, like the question that is never asked at a hearing.
The media's doing a terrific job of not asking questions it doesn't want to know the answer to. It doesn't ask these questions in bulk, and the great volume of questions it doesn't ask makes it cheap to not ask questions.
And it passes these savings on to you, the customer." Ace

Re: What are your favorites?
Tim O' Brien's The Things They Carried. It's a collection of war stories. The dialogue is realistic, captivating, witty and humorous. His style varies from blunt and matter-of-fact, like a news article, to an intense, heavy tone, one that makes you feel like you're getting sucked into the world of darkness and chaos that he experienced. But the kicker is that the stories are made up. They aren't fully factual, but he uses those stories to express real truths about life and human nature. He says that "story-truth can be more real than happening-truth," in that stories have this power to animate and organize things from out of death and chaos. And finally, the ending is the sexiest, most heart-tugging thing I've ever read.
